Yeah the prequel Star Wars films are not that great Ep II is one of the worst films ever made both Ep I and III have there moments. The Star Trek movies I have love them since I was a kid I was born in 1981 so I grow up with the Movies then watched the TV show.

The first two at least had some killer parts…..loved the Boba/Jango Fett scenes in the 2nd one, and Darth Maul was awesome…..so much better than this guy (who I love in Girls):

But where have I ever pretended that Final Frontier is a "good" movie? I like it for the score and the wonderful character beats, not the half-assed storytelling or the terrible VFX. And the thing with STID is that I don't rate those particular character moments as being wonderful at all from my personal subjective viewpoint. The arc of the main protagonists just doesn't grab me emotionally, as I've said before, and if that doesn't happen then the other faults of the movie become magnified ten fold.

It's like I'm arguing with Spock: all you see is cold logic, being baffled by people liking one film and not another based on their emotional reaction to it, but that's what art is all about IMO. There are myriad tangible objective methods to assessing art, natch, but at the end of the day it really does come down to the illogical human nature of emotions as to why someone might give one movie a pass and another a fail, despite there being objective transgressions concurrent to both.

I don't hate any of the ST movies, but TFF is close to the bottom for me. It's not terrible, just a lot of bad moments IMO. Though I think I'll give it a rewatch with all this recent discussion.

For the sake of being on-topic to STB: these are my thoughts.

I love that "blizzard" bit, it's no more goofy than Uhura - the communications expert - not being able to read/pronounce Klingon in Undiscovered Country, or even worse: that they're using dusty old reference books that just happened to be on board. But in both cases the scene itself is fun and that gets me through it! It's those damned emotions again.

Hey, if you like it, that's cool, I just think it's a bit too much. Why would they think she couldn't pinpoint their location...when she's on a starship? To me it's dumber than the bit in TUC, which I actually think is kinda funny as long as I ignore the fact that, yes, she should know freaking Klingon.

Well like Geoff I just disagree with you. He was that same mix of swagger and contemplation in all the movies really. In V he has the thoughtful moments about death and god, he has some of the most humble moments in the series with McCoy and Spock. Yes he has "I'M THE CAPTAIN!" moments, but he does so in every movie and most episodes. It's nothing weird or different in Final Frontier specifically.

I said it was the worst of the original ten movies, so obviously I agree it's flawed. However a lot of those flaws are exaggerated and as a Trek fan I still love it, for the same character stuff Geoff talks about. It just nails those characters and puts them in a lot of situations for great dialog and moments.

[Show spoiler]The dubious character of Kalara, is she a former human also, I watched a spoilery review where they ( reviewers ) assumed she was. loosing her ability to speak because of the draining technology modified more than just physique but mental ability or capacity as well.

I assumed she was as she is, a natural species but entered an agreement after being brought down by Krall

So that one aspect is your sticking point? It is a real concept though. You really can mess with a hive or a flock in real life. It isn't some movie concept made up by Independence Day.
