Yep, it's a horribly convoluted layout but I stuck with it, there's some fantastic stuff buried in the PT and OT discs. The third is just a bunch of archive making ofs and newer but super-fluffy documentaries.

In some ways the extra commentary for each film was one of my highlights of the set, there's some good stuff in there on all the movies.

^ yeah I really enjoyed the commentaries on the PT, but haven't gotten around to the OT yet. Frankly I find the making of the PT to be far more interesting, not because the movies are better or anything, but just to get some semblance of an idea as to what they were thinking for certain things.

I like how Lucas doesn't have the balls to address any of the changes during the OT commentaries.

"see here, in 1983 on this date James Earl Jones had laryngitis and couldn't yell out "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO" so I had to wait 30 years to add it.

He mentions the change from the Sebastian Shaw force ghost to Hayden in the Jedi commentary, he says that it's because that was the last time Anakin was 'good' that he returned to that state.

Did you not sell your saga set though? Or did you rebuy it? The extras are a bit jumbled up but there's still some groovy stuff on discs 7 and 8 at least.

Yes, I sold it. Doesn't stop from me from remembering what was on the discs though, I did a review of it for another site so I had to go through the whole thing at the time.

I guess Lucas forgot about Vader throwing the Emperor down the shaft and saving Luke 10 minutes earlier?

This is why Disney and Fox need to release the theatrical versions of the OT on BD so those of us who like our films to have continuity and make some sense can forget the prequels and the SE changes and just get on with the new stuff they are offering. Make the new stuff where it can piggy back off both the entire saga or just the theatrical trilogy.

Why does he have to explain the changes? It's not like any explanation would justify the changes anyway.

It is a commentary track, aren't they supposed to talk about the film? If you are going to change it 35 times you would think it would be brought up.

Aren't they talked about elsewhere? I remember there's a featurette before each of the movies on the 97 SE tapes, but can't remember anything from the DVDs (haven't really gone through the BDs for the OT cuz I never watch em on that format).

Both versions of the Anakin ghost equally fail to represent the reality of what Anakin actually looked like at the time of his death.

Shaw's ghost depicts an unburned Anakin, in Jedi attire, evidently "healed" of his Mustafar injuries, with hair. Anakin is here "corrected", if you will. What we see here happens to be the visual image of an "as if" scenario: what Anakin would have looked like if he had remained a Jedi instead of turning to the dark side and becoming Vader. The crucial turning point is during the PT, ROTS in particular. We may envision an alternate timeline of sorts, a "what could have been" type of thing, in which Anakin makes a different choice in ROTS and never turns. The Shaw ghost represents a snapshot of Anakin at 4 ABY along this timeline.

The Hayden ghost is a snapshot of Anakin at the point where the timelines diverged. By making the right choice the second time around it is as if Anakin has reverted to his former self.

He mentions some changes, but any changes made for the 2011 set wouldn't be mentioned because the commentaries were recorded in 2004 during production of Revenge of the Sith.

I understand the change. I guess Lucas counts when the Emperor names him Darth Vader as the true death of Anakin. I think that's definitely debatable. I suppose it is his movie....

I'm not spiritually inclined but Anakin's redemption is enough to convince me that elderly Anakin as a ghost makes more sense than young Anakin as a ghost but that's just me. If the OUT were packaged with the enhanced versions Id approve any change Lucas wants to make to these films!

If they released some kind of impossible and mythic disc that let you pick which "special edition" changes to use then pedo Anakin smile would be waaaaaaaaaay down there on my list. I'd probably use CG Cloud City though.

Agreed. Apologies in advance if some people find this obnoxious, but I actually like some of the visual changes Lucas has made over the years, and think I understand why he felt them necessary. Lifting Cloud City off a boxy soundstage and giving it a sense of air and light is one of them. (Making Mos Eisley more bustling is probably not.)

I'd actually like to see a Disney task force sit down with Lucas and nut out the actual issues that need to be addressed -- VFX, light sabers, augmented scenery, visual consistencies and magic rocks -- that don't stuff up the plot or become risible, and go back to the originals and redo them from scratch in HD quality.

I'd personally buy that set of the OT all over again.

^ a lot of the changes he made are harmless and some are actually pretty good. But the ones that are bad are REALLY bad.

Yes, and there are also other changes (such as for the sake of consistency) that he should have made already, and still hasn't.

If the force ghosts were accurately representing the character at the time of death, then shouldn’t Obi-Wan be a torso? (I’m a torso!). He’d be on a little roller board like Billy Ray Valentine.

And if (and that’s a very big if) the Sith could be brought back as ghosts, (considering Vader was, so maybe?) Darth Maul would just be a torso too, and Tyrannus would be what, a head? A headless, handless body? Ray Park could play both!
