I don't actively object to this change, as far as it goes, but it's still a change, and I'd rather watch the original 1980 theatrical release. That's the kind of hairpin I am.

Personally, I think he should have been in there from the very beginning back in 1980.
I agree with this. I'd rather see the original version. I think it was kinda creepy to see chimpanzee eyes superimposed over the woman's face in that scene. It doesn't matter to me if it's a different person playing the emperor. I don't think anyone really cares that the actor playing Dumbledore in the first two Harry Hotter movies isn't the same actor in the remaining films.

It matters because McDiarmid also played him in the PT.

True. That might be the only change I can understand some people calling "necessary." I still want the original version though!

Yup, this is one of the big things where I think the alterations matter when you're watching Lucas' 6-film saga in its entirety.

Back in the day, the discrepancy of the Emperor in Empire and Jedi was never that big of a deal. The mysterious Emperor character was only in one small scene as a hologram, and then hes different when you finally see him in the next film but you can live with it, as those kinds of recasting can happen (Like Voldemort in the first Harry Potter before Ralph Fiennes came on board later on). It certainly never bothered me much.

But if you're watching the whole saga with Ian McDiarmid in 3 films beforehand building him up as the character? Then suddenly its extremely jarring to see the Emperor who's clearly not the character show up. Dialog changes aside, its easily the biggest alteration that I actually liked. It reminded me of when Ridley Scott fixed the stunt-double with a bad wig problem in Blade Runner for the Final Cut, only more so.

As a purist I prefer the original Emperor. When watching all 6 films starting with the Prequels I do sorta like the new Emperor but again I sorta wish it had been done a little better. A more ROTJ looking Emperor, McDiarmid sounding less monotone and unconvincing, and with the original dialogue intact.

Agreed. It's not that I wouldn't welcome a little continuity fixin' but when it's executed as poorly as it is in the OT (Boba's voice, the flat-as-a-pancake Emperor redo as mentioned ^, the horrible outtake of Hayden as anakin's force ghost appears) I'd rather stick with the original.

If we every get the OT on BD there will be things I miss like the Cloud City backgrounds and big practical wampa, but by and large I will trade it all for original goodness. Both versions in 4k would be nice though.

Aye, I've already said that I'd love to have the 1997 versions in there too. They debuted some of the most contentious changes (Mos Eisley extension, Han & Greedo, Jabba in ANH, Luke's controversial scream in Empire) but still cleaned up a lot of the effects and the Emperor is still monkey-eyes lady, Boba is still Boba and Sebastian Shaw is still anakin's force ghost.

I loved her so much back in the day, as in super creepy and moody. As a kid I was always like "oh wow the Emperor" even though Jedi was already out and I already knew he wasn't quite so crazy looking. Oh wells.

I think Darth Maul might be the coolest, most badass person in the entire SW universe. Just genuinely looking tough and not speaking much. And dueling with 2 Jedis at once and actually killing one in the process. He is one badass mother lol.

Agreed. I know the cartoons delve into what happens after. But a Darth Maul Stories movie would be amazing.

You ever check this out?

You could pretty much say the same thing about Malekith from Thor: The Dark World. Not to be a killjoy. I like Darth Maul, too.

I'll take atmosphere and mood over that every time, thanks.

And now I know you're on a wind-up mission with that Malekith comment. Worst Marvel villain in the worst Marvel film.
