The 3D re-release of Phantom Menace took about $100M worldwide but would the public turn out to see another re-release of it (plus Clones and Sith) just because it had updated effects? Hey, it worked with the original trilogy so I'm sure a prequel trilogy 'Special Edition' would get audiences out in their droves.

If my crystal ball is working then we'll get a very limited theatrical run in May/June next year with perhaps a home video debut in autumn the fall to drum up the hype for Ep VIII. If my crystal ball is not working then I'm taking it back for a refund.
We're gonna get trolled and they'll announce IV-VI on 3D BD instead lol

But seriously though, I think it was captveg who made the point that LFL could sell us the same PT/OT Bu-rays all over again if they just did a TFA 3D with them: put both versions (2D and 3D for the PT, SE and originals for the OT) plus a bonus disc inside the same classy style of case for each movie and watch those mother****ers fly off the shelves faster than the Falcon in hyperspace.

I would love another theatrical run in theaters. Being born in '88 I obviously missed out on the originals. Got to see the prequels (and Clone Wars and TFA) in theaters thiugh. And I saw the special edition of A New Hope in theaters in '97.

Never did get to see Empire or Jedi though I was so upset when they canceled the 3D showings. It was fun seeing Phantom Menace again.

Agreed, I will definitely be seeing these in the theater if they are re-released. I remember in 1997 how much fun it was seeing these on the big screen (even though they were the SEs). I actually went twice to each movie with different people each time. It was cool only waiting 2-3 weeks before the following movie would be released.

Which is why part of me thinks they'll hold off on the UOT til the big I-IX boxset. People will have bought these movies so many times on so many formats by then, the best way to ensure they'll buy them again is offering the unaltered OT as part of it. But we'll see. Next year would definitely be nice.

Sure, that's also a possibility but I can't see them not releasing the restored edition of Star Wars in some form next year, even if it is just a short theatrical run with no BD/UHD to follow.

I'm not hoping for/expecting 4K at all in the near future. Unless Disney decides they wanna use the UOT as their launch title, which would be epic.

Word on the street is they're looking to jump in next year. I'm hoping Rogue One is their first day and date combo pack. Doctor Strange would be too soon. Either way this lines up with perhaps an original trilogy set timed for Christmas and Episode 8, but who knows.

Interesting, I guess if it's Rogue One then that'd bode well for the other movies. I just wonder if we'd really get 4K right out of the gate or if they'd do another staggered release like with TFA.

If Disney releases the restored UOT next year, I bet it would only be released on BD initially (even if they are jumping into UHD BD) as this trilogy is too good for them not to double dip on. I mean they waited for some time before releasing the 3D version of TFA.

There's a possibility they may do one film at at a time. If there's a remastered 4K Star Wars perhaps it will get a theatrical release next year and/or a video/digital release. It may even be done to tie in the release of Episode VIII. IMO that's a more plausible theory since we haven't gotten an official announcement yet. Then they might do Empire and Jedi separately as well either to tie in with IX or one of their spin off movies or both!

I saw all of the original films in their special edition versions in 1997. I would gladly go to the theater to see them in their original unaltered glory. I wish I was old enough to see the original cuts in theaters in '77, '80, and '83, but I was I born in '82.

I saw the original in 1977 (I was five years old). I remember my older sister taking me the first time, but it was sold out after waiting in a very long line. I remember the disappointment. I saw Empire ('80) and Jedi ('83) on opening nights. I remember friends at school piling around me afterwards asking, "So what happened in the movie?!" who hadn't seen it.

I also recall see the first movie in one of the theater returns...I think it was after Empire was released so maybe around 1981 or 1982 or leading up to Jedi?

I saw Star Wars on a rerelease before Empire came out and then saw Empire and Jedi on opening days. I remember the Ton Tons scaring the ever loving crap out of my little brother. I mean full on hysteria. My mom had to take him into the lobby to calm him down.

You were closer than I am! I was born in '93! I did see the SE of ANH when it came out but I only have vague memories of it.

When I was 9 or 10 I got to see a complete trilogy screening of the films in theaters. I can't remember where but it was sometime in '92 I think. Unfortunately I didnt appreciate the films as much as I would come to a few years later, and I think I even fell asleep during a lot of the middle of it (probably missed most of Empire-- I know, I know.)

Yep, I was thinking that too. Even with the SEs in 1997 it was Star Wars that did boffo business (over $100M ) while Empire and Jedi took a lot less, so it makes sense to celebrate the original movie on its own while leaving the others in reserve.

Another thing that makes me think the remastered ANH is coming is because of Rogue One itself, as I don't think anyone imagined that it would tie in so closely to ANH. I don't mean the ending so much as that was always on the cards, but things like the CG resurrection of a certain character - hell, I was expecting a brief cameo, not a proper supporting role, and I can't help but think that Disney are priming audiences to see these characters again on-screen in just a few months' time.

God, what a double bill that'd be: Rogue One with the 4K resto of Star Wars to follow.
