Second, I imagine removing the logo and fanfare would ignite battles like the removal of the RKO cards from some of the early Disney canon films, or Silver Screen Partners credits from TLM and BATB (though those ones are relatively minor edits). Besides, if they remove them, it wouldn't be the UOT anymore.
The RKO logos themselves weren't the sole issue, snipping them removed the music composed by various arists to accompany the distribution card leading straight into the opening titles...it was especially notable in 80's when the Walt Disney Pictures "glowing castle" distributor card replaced RKO, Buena Vista, and Walt Disney Productions distributor cards... Trimming them was like removing a three second overture. These music cues were unique to the film, as opposed to the Fox logo and fanfare, which has been used for many, many films. I got no dog in the fight over losing or keeping the Fox fanfare, only saying in the case of the Disney feature films, it was clunky and a bit more egregious. At any rate, they slowly started coming back in re-issues in the 90's.

Right, but even after 2020 A New Hope would still keep the logo, right? Cuz of the whole "in perpetuity" thing.

It's sad that I really miss the original versions and yet have just kind of resigned myself to the SEs and watch those anyway. I should care enough to seek out the reconstructed versions and whatnot, but I just sigh and go "whatever" and pop in the blu. I guess not being anywhere near as huge a Star Wars guy as some of you are is part of that, but really I think I'm just sick of the whole thing.

I know people will roll their eyes and call me dramatic but the SEs really kind of damaged my Star Wars love a good bit.

Meh, it's easy enough to get rid of the side bars and move the screen up enough to see the subtitles. They're by no means optimal but they're good enough. Don't feel like learning how to find/download/burn onto disc the despecialized ones.

Unless LucasFilm and Disney buy the distribution privileges from Fox outright or do some kind of horsetrading or both.

Can't imagine Fox would ever relinquish those rights, it's free money anytime LFL wants to re-release ANH.

I appreciate what Harmy did for the Star Wars fanbase, but the release of the 35mm scan of Star Wars has made that version unwatchable for me. Obvious rotoscoping at times, and the main source is that nasty looking Lowry transfer on the blu-rays. Team Negative 1 release is a much more pure experience.

And I said this months back but I'll say it again, I hope the eventual 4K remaster of the UOT comes with the option to view Star Wars with the '81 crawl via seamless branching. It's jarring to have a Star Wars marathon with one film not having an episode number and title in the crawl.

Would Disney actually give the viewer a choice between the original Star Wars crawl and the updated one with Episode IV A New Hope? That seems like such a small detail that 99.99% of people wouldn't care about. I can't see them trying to appeal to fans who are that die hard. Most people would probably think that's a ridiculous option to have on the menu screen.

I dont see how so many take the "official word" as Gospel. Lucas lied blatantly in the past about never planning episodes 7-9, then the Faces VHS where he talked about it, then his later denial again. He changed his tune so many times about anything related to possible sequels for decades.

Now, do you expect Disney to come out and risk a huge PR poo-storm by saying he lied about the originals still existing? No, now the claim is that only the excised bits were removed like nobody at LFL knows how to splice them in. So what he told us was true, from a certain point of view. They are softening the stance and hinting that a restoration is possible when it probably wasnt needed in the first place. They are just massaging the story from a PR perspective.

Lucas lied because he knew we would never rest. He could not say "stop asking me" to the media, he had to give them a dodgey answer. Lucas was a hardcore achivist, there is no way he destroyed his own material, it was only in a vault until a future Cashgrab

You'd be surprised. Disney got Universal to give Walt's Oswald cartoons up as part of a contract negotiation for Al Michaels (and boy, don't ever bring that up to Al Michaels, it really rubs him the wrong way). Just depends on what the parties want from each other and if they can agree to terms.

I do know for a fact - 100%, verified fact - that Disney is digitizing at 4k every scrap of film ever shot for Star Wars. That includes every alternate take and every separate element of an effects shot. All footage searchable by topic/character/key words, of course.

There's some ego involved, but I think the truth was financial -- film tech is leaps and bounds ahead of where it was when he made the 1997 SE. The truth, as I understand it, was that (back in the early 2000's) he said he wasn't going to pay the (at the time) millions of dollars in man hours to put all those myriad removed sections back together again. Today, such a task would be (in relative terms) much easier and much less expensive. And in his defense, he was so taken aback by the outrage over the Han/Greedo scene, he said if he had to do it all over again, knowing what would eventually happen, he never would have done it.

That's minor -- extremely minor -- compared to all the other changes. The big one, of course, being Han v. Greedo: Dawn of Revisionism.

The other two members of the "trilogy of suck" would have to be:

2) Jedi Rocks: Rise of Showing Off Excessive CGI, Atmosphere & Continuity Be Damned

3) Hayden Christensen as a Force Ghost: The Final F*-You From George Lucas
