I can excuse AOTC and I like ROTS. Phantom Menace... well, got Liam, Pernellia August, Maul, a good sword fight at the end... and trade negotiations. George, I dunno who you think you are kidding, but even if this series is intended for twelve year old, as stated this week, no 12 year old alive is gonna watch CSPAN in Space.

I don't disagree with Lucas' "12-year olds" comments. I was 12 when I really got into Star Wars, and I enjoy watching them now because it makes me feel that way again. The big problem with The Phantom Menace was that it felt like he dialed that back to more of a 6-10 age range (same with some of the goofier additions to the Special Editions of the classic trilogy).

As for whiny Episode II Anakin? I think a big part of my problem with that is he should have started that way in Episode I (instead of little kid Annie) and had more time to develop into the great Jedi and good friend of Obi Wan before his fall in III. Not good character arc planning, IMO.

This is another case of someone wanting to write their own film, or try to express what they think fans would have wanted, instead of accepting what Lucas wanted.

I too did this (lets face it most all of OT fans did and most still do...), but until I tried to see the story from Lucas point of view, and yes worked a little to put together those pieces, I missed out on what is one of the greatest stories in any sequel world.

The one thing I do know for a fact is that Jake Lloyd was not that bad, and matter of fact there were parts that I found him to be very enjoyable.

A whiney brat...yeah yeah...lot of kids are. This is a fact of life. To put him as something else is to put up a Hollywood ideal instead of taking the character for what he is.

Though for the record, Luke was far more of "meh" brat to me, and I think people that miss this fact have those rose colored glasses on full Luke Jedi mode. Guinness and Fisher were far more compelling to me. Hell Cushing had my attention far more and honestly I couldn't wait to get Hamill off the screen compared to them. Though I admit that Hamill was full force in the end, in many ways I call Lloyd a victim of circumstance. His accidental shooting at the end of Phantom was the annoying part, not how he acted it.

What has happened to Jake Lloyd in recent news is heartbreaking to me, and he didn't deserve the unneeded wrath of far brattier Star Wars fans. I hope he is able to get his demons behind him and understand that no matter what, he has nothing to be ashamed of.

To me Episode I wouldn't be the same without his charm and I take it exactly for what it is.

...but of course to the haters, Ed Furlong...sure that is so much better (you can't just go around killing people??)....man when I hear that whiney voice, it makes me think of poking out my ears with molten steel as a good thing as an alternative to listening to that brat!

The trade negotiations are just a pretext for war.

There were a few subtle hints in Episode I of Anakin becoming that way. Like the look of disappointment and rage in his face when the Jedi council told him he wouldn't be trained.

One thing I liked about the first segment is that Lucas told everyone to shut up and enjoy the movies.
He said "Everyone needs to remember, I made these for 12 year olds."

He's right, but even 12-year olds deserve better actors than Jake Lloyd and Hayden Christensen.

Anakin's casting in the prequels is pretty much the only beef I have against those movies.

Hayden isn't a bad actor though...
He said in interviews BEFORE Attack of the CLones came out that he tried to emulate the speech patterns and mannerisms of James Earl Jones, David Prowse and the other Suit actors from the original trilogy.

Yeah, kids kinda do that when they sprout into adulthood BUT that doesn't make the transition any less jarring between movies, and Anakin himself is such a whiny little shit with a nice line in creepy staring that's it's almost impossible to empathise with him, at least it is for me. If we'd had the same actor throughout all three films then we maybe could've had a more sympathetic performance from Hayden as an older Anakin in Ep 1 which would've lent much more empathy to the 'whiny little shit' stage of adolescence seen in Ep 2.

Yes, Luke was equally whiny but the key is that he became the hero of the piece, NOT the villain, so Lucas should've inverted the concept and made Anakin the likeable rogue - the Han, if you will - of the prequels which would've made his fall so much more bittersweet rather than a big bowl of meh. And I tend to be more the opposite. I think Lloyd's performance, such as it was, crippled the Anakin character so severely, it wasn't until he was killing younglings that we even got remotely close to the character. Hayden did the best he could with what he was given, but given a bad start and the Flanneled One is not capable of getting a character performance out of an actor gives us the result. And I'm the one who will absolutely roast TPM, apologize for AOTC and enjoy ROTS.

Also fixing everything else people mention, like the rest of the garbage mattes and the still-remaining inconsistent lightsaber effects in the original.

Basically, if they're doing 4K versions but it's not the UOT, at least make it a real project and something that isn't as inconsistent and quite frankly half-assed as the stuff done for the last DVD and Blu-Ray versions. But of course, over anything else and any other possibilities, I'd rather they just do what should have been done over 10 years ago and just restore the actual films as they were in 1977, 1980, and 1983 and just let that be the end of it.
THIS would be good news for all except those passionate few who will die b*tching about getting anything other than the "originals" (not that that would be a bad thing, just that it's unlikely in the extreme as long as a certain person is still alive).

The bad apples of SW nerdom own their proportionate amount of responsibility of the consequences from their incessant psychological bombardment they waged upon the poor soul over the years.

I definitely agree with Mark Hamill, some folks really have been unduly cruel to various individuals and it has always been wrong.

It is one thing to be passionate but passion is not license to be a jackass.

I like to believe folks' better angels would dissuade them from posting horrible personal attacks against people whose work they dislike, but SW threads have really been a place for the lowest common denominators to vomit all over the internet. I am SO in favor of reasonable approaches to voicing dislike of something. But those people who have gone online to call George Lucas fat, an idiot, a childhood-raper, or to threaten his daughter- and I've seen all of these things more than once- have lost at life. I mean, literally, lost at life.

Yeah, all the movies have some insane and over-the-top stuff in them. The difference with Kingdom I think is that it has a slightly more jokey tone and a faker look which accentuates it somewhat, makes it seem more cartoonish. The only cartoonish action moment in the original trilogy off the top of my head is the plane in the tunnel scene in Crusade.

I think it's supposed to have a slightly more jokey tone, because it takes place during the 1950s, which was an era of cheesy b movies.

Absolutely agree, and if one doesn't think it would have an negative effect on the boy actor needs to get a reality check.

The gig should have been a dream for him, and instead he got the wrath of jackasses.

To me, his work was fine, and as for Haydn, I saw absolutely no problem with his work. He is a very good actor.

Now don't get me wrong, I don't hate the prequel movies. In fact, I think people hate on them because it is the cool thing to do. Yes, they are inferior to the OT, and yes, TPM is not a particulary great movie, but I would rather watch one of the prequels again over 80% of the movies out there.
