Good for you, but they can cause scratching randomly. Finally started seeing it myself and moved my discs to spare cases.

I'm not sure it was a stipulation that said "Can't release while alive", but he's been the reason thus far we don't have them. So one could assume that once he passes, Disney would have a better opportunity at releasing them if they choose to (which they probably won't).
I wonder if there’s a loophole that would let them release the unaltered OT along with the special editions. It could be argued that since they’re not being outright replaced by the unaltered OT, they’re not actually altering them.

I think he's behind it. He'd do everything he possibly could to bury the originals.

I've been holding out as well for the original trilogy in their original, unaltered state. I've been waiting a while and it sounds like I'll be waiting a little longer. It's cool, if LucasFilms doesn't want my money, that's fine. Plenty of other studios putting out the stuff I want to see so I'll throw my money at them I guess, lol

Are we to believe that if Lucas changed his mind and told Disney to release the originals if they want, that they would? I wonder if Disney even gives a sh**.

Disney doesn't seem interested in releasing alternate, extended, or director's cuts of their films.

None of the Marvel films have had extended cuts even though some of them, like Age of Ultron, could have benefited from them.

Point of fact, they're even stingy with deleted scenes; we know there's a ton of stuff from the cutting floor from Rogue One, and a few scenes from The Force Awakens that haven't seen the light of day after two blu-ray releases.

The Last Jedi has a generous assortment of cut material. Most of it sh*t.

I hope they're saving the deleted material for a future box set that collects all the films. I'm still waiting to see the 'new' deleted scenes from the original 1977 STAR WARS - unveiled last year for the 40th anniversary.

Well, I certainly don't want someone to die just to own some movies on blu-ray.

Nobody does, but lets face it...after the tributes and memorials are over, a lot of us will immediately start waiting for the announcement.

I was humming the Battle of the Heroes music from Revenge of the Sith and my girlfriend thought it sounded like Oh My Darling Clementine, so she sang, "Oh my darling, oh my darling, oh my darling Anakin, you are gone and lost forever, to the Dark Side Anakin."

Time has been kind to the Prequels (and I think Disney churning out mediocre movies every single year helps them too IMO.) RLM even said something (somewhat) nice about them, which is a shock:

It took me 3 days to get through Phantom Menace in a rewatch this year. Your mileage may vary.

Also they did release the original versions in 2006. Maybe they could say that they release it now just in better quality. It was approved by Lucas.

On the box of the last release of the UOT on VHS it says that it is the last time you will be able to purchase the theatrical versions of the films. When Lucas released the laserdisc ports on DVD in 2006 I am surprised some a**hole lawyer didn't sue him.

The reason the 2006 DVDs came out was because fans kept bootlegging the originals on DVD via the Laserdiscs and Fox wanted to put an end to it. Lucas agreed as long as he didn’t have to spend money on restoring them hence why we got 4:3 letterboxed Laserdisc masters which was only a minor improvement over what fans had been bootlegging anyways. I wouldn’t be surprised if Lucas ok’d this just because he knew fans would find the originals unbearable in non-anamorphic form compared to the 16:9 enhanced SE’s.

It has nothing to do with luck. It has to do with the fact that I store and handle my discs properly.

I was so horrified by the packaging on this that I recased my discs immediately. Unfortunately I've now used up all my extra cases.

Kathleen Kennedy stated in an interview last year that there is no arrangement in place that dictates which versions of which films can or cannot be released. She also said there will be no more alterations and no plans to rerelease anything.

It may very well not be a matter of official contractual record but more of a 'gentleman's (and lady's ) agreement' that LFL wouldn't move on restoring the original originals while Lucas is still breathing. He hand-picked Kathy Kennedy to take over the firm and she's known George a looooong time so she's not about to start violating his wishes. The "no more alterations" line in itself could have a double meaning, not just stating that there will be no more changes on top of the current creator-approved versions but also inferring that they won't be reverse-engineered back to their original state any time soon...

Just for reference: the cryptic-but-not-really tweet didn't just come from some Joe Schmoe LFL "employee" but from Pablo Hidalgo, he's been with LFL for almost 20 years and is a major player in the Lucasfilm Story Group which oversees Star Wars canon in the cleaned-up post-'Legends' era. If he says that George is the one obstructing the release of the originals then I believe it (not that it requires a major leap of faith anyway).

Ah, I remember a decade ago when those DVDs came out. At the time, I still had a standard def TV and I remember wondering why some people were upset with the PQ on those theatrical cuts. All I knew at the time was “we actually have the unaltered cuts, in widescreen, on disc! This is amazing!”

Then the first time I watched one of them on my HDTV, I was like “...ohhhh” lol.

It’s still nice having them on disc.. but, god, I wish they’d at least put out proper anamorphic releases, even if they didn’t give them an extreme overhaul.
