he's using rca's right now tho
I know, that is why upgrading is worth it. with optical (assuming his receiver can accept that) he could get 5.1 but then he would have crappy lossy instead of lossless (covered in #4 in my post) why spend money on an optical cable for a very temporary partial fix when upgrading the receiver will get him a more permanent fix?

well he's looking for the best picture...he's got a 1080i tv..buying an expensive receiver for lossless audio seems to be the opposite of what he's looking for

i figured suggesting to him to buy a 2 dollar cable to get better sound was better than suggesting a $300+ receiver to get the same picture..but even better sound lol.

is an optical cable 2$? the guy was asking if getting a new receiver and HDMI improve his set-up. The video will most likely not benefit much currently(since he says he has a 1080i TV which I am guessing means 720p resolution) but the audio will benefit a lot. What is wrong giving good advice to someone that is willing to spend the money?

just making sure he's not getting the wrong idea. his first post says he's looking for the best video quality. hdmi and component are going to give him basically the same picture. so there's really no point in telling him to update, unless he's planning on a tv upgrade in the future as well. but yeah..the audio will for sure benefit.

and actually..i think i paid less than 2 bucks per cable the last time i made a cable purchase.
