In terms of story, what have we really learned or experienced from episodes 7 & 8? Not much. The new films are tedious and redundant.

Well, what about the characters then? Are they at least fun and interesting? Let's go through the characters for 7 & 8.
  • Is Rey an interesting character? No. She never had the opportunity to grow as a character. She was almost instantly imbued with the powers to expertly fly ships, speak Wookie, wield lightsabers, and use Jedi mind tricks. Her journey is boring and she's uninteresting.
  • What about Poe? Is he interesting? No.
  • Finn? No.
  • Leia? No.
  • Han? No.
  • Chewbacca? No.
  • Luke? Not really.
  • Yoda? Yes! He was nutty. He's the rare exception.
  • Snoke? No.
  • Kylo? No.

They've managed to make the characters boring and not very fun. To me, these films were unnecessary and did a disservice to the legacy of Han, Luke, and Leia.

Anakin could expertly fly ships, and he was just nine years old. Luke was able to expertly fly an X-Wing he never flew one before in his life. How is Rey any different?

If you pay attention to when Rey used the lightsaber on the Starkiller Base duel, she was actually pretty sloppy with it.

She was able to use the mind trick after she accidentally reversed Kylo's Force interrogation.

The factbook "Rey's Survival Guide" strongly implies that she learned to speak Wookiee using the computer language tapes that she found during her salvage of Rebel ships, in much the same way that she learned to speak droidspeak.

Like almost died in AnH. He would have if Han hadn’t saved him

Young Anakin is a crappy character that no one liked

That had zilch to do with his piloting skills. He obviously could have bailed had he wanted to, but he was no coward. He had a mission, and he was dedicated to making the shot.

If anything, Anakin is the terrible pilot for failing to notice a big ass freighter closing in on him and blasting his wing man away.

Anakin was super strong in the force. It helped him to fly. But hell, even he had trouble when he was a kid. He got better through the years.

Luke flew skyhoppers since he was a kid. He didn't just randomly start flying. They even say an XWing isn't much different.

One shouldn't have to resort to a book to get back-story. That's poor storytelling.

Rey and FN should nit have been able to use a light saber as well as they did. The blade has no weight. Trying to fight with one with no training means you will lose a limb. And before anyone says anything about Han in Empire, he wasn't fighting, he only used it a knife. It was on for all of 3 seconds.

Anakin Skywalker: Highly Force-sensitive, but untrained. A slave, and the only human who can podrace. As a child, pilots a small fighter into battle, and destroys a Trade Federation blockade ship. Cool.

Luke Skywalker: Highly Force-sensitive, but untrained. A moisture farmer who verbally alludes to some piloting experience. Takes an X-wing into battle, and destroys the Death Star. (Kind of like Randy Quaid in ID4, a crop duster who pilots a jet fighter to destroy an alien mothership.) Awesome!

Rey: Highly Force-sensitive, but untrained. A scavenger who verbally alludes to some piloting experience. Pilots her boss's ship, which she is mechanically familiar with, in a desperate escape. Destroys a couple TIE Fighters, with the help of a gunner. NOOOOOOOOOO!!!

luke is shown to be terrible with using a light saber.
We don't really see him proficient with it until Return of the Jedi which is years later.

Yet, you ignore the fact that Rey was succesfully using jedi mind tricks and beating Kylo pretty easily.... she's never even heard of the force until the events of this movie take place

Exactly... we've seen that arc, so show me something NEW.

Rey's obvious talent fighting with her staff on Jakku is analogous to Luke's skyhopper experience, so therefore her swift aptitude with the lightsaber is analogous to Luke's ability to pilot an X-Wing like a veteran.

EDIT: THAT part I totally buy, but in full disclosure... I don't know HOW she's such a great pilot. Yet I'm willing to "go with it", cuz IT'S A FANTASY MOVIE ABOUT SPACE WIZARDS, lol

Your point is well taken, but where'd you get that "she's never even heard of the force until the events of the movie"? I had the sense she'd absolutely heard the legends. "Luke Skywalker??", she exclaims to Finn, "I thought he was a myth!" Surely if she'd heard the legendary tales of Luke Skywalker, one can make the leap that she'd heard of the Force and some its mythical applications -- like the Jedi mind trick. I had the sense she was trying out something she'd heard about, with little confidence that it'd work.

And he didn't defeat a highly trained Jedi/Sith in ANH. Nor did he in TESB. He didn't even use the mind trick until ROTJ.

No large amount of training even matters if you're not in the right physical and mental conditions to fight.

Rey being a natural with everything fits the franchise. I'll NEVER understand that complaint. Both little boy Anakin and Luke were shown to be naturally talented before training. Kylo was bleeding out when she fought him in TFA. It's seriously fine. Stop obsessing over it.

This guy gets it.

If Rey was a male, I honest to goodness think there wouldn’t be such an outcry.

Luke Skywalker: Ten thousand? We could almost buy our own ship for that.
Han Solo: But who’s going to fly it kid? You?
Luke Skywalker: You bet I could, I’m not such a bad pilot myself. (starts to get up) We don’t have to sit here and listen…

---------

Wedge Antilles (Red 2): That's impossible! Even for a computer.
Luke: It's not impossible. I used to bullseye womp rats in my T-16 back home, they're not much bigger than two meters.

---------
LEADER: You sure you can handle this ship?
BIGGS: Sir, Luke is the best bush pilot in the Outer Rim Territories.
