Mine's on the way, I'm not sure it'll be as candid as Rinzler's superb 'making ofs' but these big-bastard Taschen editions (got the Bond and Kubrick ones) are lovely.
The only one of those I've wanted was the Walt one, and I dropped the ball by failing to get it when amazon had that great sale a while back.

Fortunately my canon ends with material that existed no later than 1983, so I really don't care about this "revelation".

The last thing unread was the Dark Nest Trilogy and then the Darth Plagueis novel.
I enjoyed most if the Expanded Universe, at least up until the New Jedi Order.
I don't consider any of the Disney stuff true canon.
It's all just glorified/big budget fan fiction.

That was an idea George Lucas had for Episode III.

Episode III implies either Plageius created him before Palpatine took over or Palpatine used his techniques to do it after the fact. Either being confirmed wouldn't be a shock really.

Not that I care a bit about comics. Wake me if a movie ever says it.

No it wasn't. George was going to have Palpatine say it with a it knowingly being a lie to Anakin.he dropped it because people would take it as "gospel"

The Star Wars one isn't all that great, I mean it's presented in that slick Taschen style but (as I kinda suspected) because it's told as an 'oral history' by Lucas himself then it's very much in tune with the approved legends of Star Wars' creation rather than the actual truth.

What's the actual truth though?

Fans are already rewriting history - "Marcia Lucas and the edit saved Star Wars". There's even a video online claiming the entire ending with the Death Star about to destroy the Rebel base was put together in the edit, and they say this despite it being in the final screnplay & film dialogue (not ADR'ed either).

I thought that was actually a thing? Or at least that the imminent menace of the Death Star was played up in the final edit?

It's a beast, though. Lots of great pictures. Thought, at this point, there's few that none of us have seen already. And far too many special edition photos. But I also think that Lucasfilm seemingly doesn't allow these projects to happen unless the Special Editions are canon.

I guess, but Rinzler's making of books are surprisingly revealing about the production of all three. This latest tome is from the George's mouth so it's not a shocking development that it focuses so much on what he considers canon, both inside the movies and out.

I know. I have it.

TBH, this is what we have to accept. Unless it's done without Lucasfilm's approval, ANYTHING that's written or filmed will have to be from "a certain point of view."

Ya, I heard the Taschen book was mostly previously published photos with a few new ones, and a George Lucas interview filled with his revisionist history.

However, if it ever drops in price I might consider buying it just to have the higher quality copies of the photos, and for the convenience of having them all in one book.

I’m obviously referring to how George insists the OT was always planned out, the original draft of Star Wars was too long so he had to divide it into 3 movies, Vader was always Luke’s dad, and Star Wars was always intended to be a story about the rise, fall and redemption of Anakin etc etc.

Citation is any credible book detailing the production of these movies. It wasn’t my intention to bring this stuff up again, and it wasn’t meant to be an attack of George or anything.

I was shocked to see quotes from Marsha in the book, tbh.

For example: they literally didn't know what the crawl was going to say throughout production, going through several iterations (even filming some of them) before deciding on what we now know it to be, but this "script" has the exact final wording? The cult of Lucas is strong with this one
