Heh, you know what that "script" is? It's been copied out from the Art of Star Wars book (1979) and is a prime example of Lucas already seeking to print the legend rather than the truth. Peter, I don't know if you have The Annotated Screenplays by Laurent Bouzereau to hand, but let me quote this part regarding the ending of the film FROM AN INTERVIEW WITH ONE OF THE ACTUAL EDITORS, bearing in mind that this book's script does the same as the 'Art of' and just recites the final movie word for word (minus the deleted scenes) - but at least the annotations show us what it took to actually get there. From page 104, editor Richard Chew:

I had the idea that if we could put Princess Leia in jeopardy and then simultanously have Luke try to destroy the Death Star in order to save her and the Rebels, it would just provide more tension to the ending. Originally, these were not simultaneous events; they were separate. Without this crosscutting, whether Luke blew the Death Star on time or not wouldn't have had the same tension. If you look at the film, in the scenes with Leia, there's no dialogue that's on camera in synch because all the footage was taken from other scenes of the Rebels in the war room, and all the information that you're getting as to how close the Death Star is to the Rebels is either on animated screens or off-screen dialogue through a PA system. But Leia's dialogue, for instance, there wasn't really any of the exposition that would indicate that they were in jeopardy. That was all created in the editing, as was the crosscutting between the action and the shots of Darth Vader before he got into his fighter and Tarkin, the Peter Cushing character.

There's stuff about ILM that is omitted in the Rinzler book, and I haven't figured out why, when it is part of the record (in my own piece about the formation of ILM for Cinefex, and in an earlier CINEFANTASTIQUE double issue.) I have tried contacting him a few times and never gotten a response, either.

I sure hope Paul Duncan doesn't gloss over any significant events; I corresponded with him a few years back, wondering if Taschen had any interest in doing a STAR TREK book, possibly based on a huge book proposal I worked up for Pocket Books back in the early 90s (turns out Duncan has great interest in TREK, but Taschen has none), and I was really hoping to get a chance to review this for ICG magazine, but editor hasn't gotten back to me about this. Sadly, no matter how good the book is, I can't justify the price without it being a business expense.

Yeah, I mean I didn't say that Rinzler's books covered every wart but they're still far more revealing than I'd dared hope for an officially sanctioned book about SW. TBH I reckon that's why Rinzler's book on TFA got canned, he wanted to show how it wasn't all plain sailing (as films rarely are) but LFL/Disney nixed it. He even had to stop his fascinating blog about his time at LFL.

As the Taschen blurb says it's more of an "oral history" of Star Wars as told by Lucas, with a bit of gentle prodding/fawning from Duncan to move things along. I had a feeling it would turn out like that so yeah, it's not worth paying anything like what they're aksing for it. Probably best for most folks to wait for the inevitable reduced-size versions.

Fans didn't rewrite that. It's been directly quoted from Marcia, and endorsed by George, that the imminent destruction of Yavin was fabricated in the editing. . Luke's first unsuccessful trench run was deleted because it was conceived when time was not a factor in the climactic battle. All references to the rebel base being in immediate danger is made in VO by offscreen characters or made by Vader.

Dropping that run also shaved a number of shots from ILM's end of things, which made a difference in their ability to finish on time.

And the ILM folks couldn't quite believe it when Lucas came to them right at the end and asked for something that could make it look like Vader might have survived.

I couldn't figure out how to upload the WebM that I asked about earlier, as it now proves to be relevant to the current conversation.
So I uploaded it their. Not sure if this will work or not though.

The shot of Leia approaching Dodonna for comfort doesn't make sense then, nor does Tarkin's "moment of triumph" dialogue. That sure as hell wasn't created by ADR.

There is so much nonsense in this thread, it is near impossible to gain anything meaningful from its existence. Has there ever been a thread on this site that has the same member posting over 500 times? Well, this thread has 5 members with over 500 posts - one member has close to 1,500 posts. You'd think they would've made their points by now. For those members that still want to talk about the Star Wars universe, we could leave this thread open for debating whether Padme was old enough to be queen of Naboo.

Thanks for listening.

Leia being comforted by someone as their fighters are being swatted like flies isn't exactly a massive leap, and what does Tarkin's bit have to do with what Richard Chew said? He said that the CROSSCUTTING between Vader, Tarkin and the battle was played up in the edit, not that any scenes relating to those two characters were conjured out of thin air.

Now that you mention it, Padme was awfully young to be an elected queen.

I mean, a regular old queen? Sure.

But one that gets elected?

I dunno...

Maybe before she ran for queen she was a D list reality TV show host who had run every business she ran into the ground and had to file bankruptcy?

I had her diary book when I was a little girl, and she was involved in government when she was even younger than that! OMG!

That's news to me. I remember that some of the last ship stuff done was a redo of the three TIEs leaving to join the fight because elements were lost, shot by Doug Smith (probably while Edlund was down shooting the South American stuff.) And the last day the chess stuff was shot. Did the 'Vader's TIE tumbling' or the flyaway that follows not get boarded till 1977?

If the mods deleted “meaningless drivel” from this entire message board, roughly 85% of all posts would be gone.
Plus this thread and The Abyss/True Lies on BD wishlist thread would lose all their comedic value. Where’s the fun in that.
