Guess we'll just have to accept that the episode was polarizing. I have a new co-worker in my office and all last week we bonded over talking about how excited we were for episode three. Turns out we both thought it was awful because of the poor editing and how it undermined so much of what the entire series had built up to this point, but most of the people she watched it with thought it was amazing. I think the only thing we all agreed on was that Arya is a badass.

So many people wanting the show to play out the same ways as they would expect from other lesser shows they are used to.
Not only that, but GRRM frequently does stuff like this. He built up Robb for 3 Seasons/Books only to kill him, for example. I’m not sure if the white walker threat will play out exactly like this in the books(Martin has made comments that suggest there is no Night King in the books), but I’m sure it’s pretty similar.

I think I'm one of the few who had no issues watching live with HBOGo on AppleTV 4k. I didn't have any problem with pixelation/blocky picture, or finding anything too dark at all, but A) My set is calibrated and B) My AppleTV is using a wired connection for better speeds rather than Wi-Fi. My only issue with the episode was the editing on the dragon fight sequences. I found it incredibly hard to tell which dragon was which. #TeamArya

GOT has never followed time-logic. Ever. In any way whatsoever. Logically, there should be weeks or months between a lot of scenes and entire episodes, but the show just plows forward at full speed for the purposes of dramatic fulfillment. It's been said that the North is over 1000 miles from Kings Landing, but that makes absolutely no sense in the show's depiction of Westeros. However, one can also simply say that "Westeros really isn't as big as you think." and come to a more acceptable compromise between the show's fast-traveling and logic.

I didn't notice any pixelation/banding/blockiness either. I enjoy a dark aesthetic and I don't think I would have been nearly as bothered by this episode if not for the editing and direction of the action scenes. To me, that was the big issue. I did not think that information was being effectively communicated to the viewer for large chunks of the episode.

And as far as how the whole "winter is coming" thing ended up playing out, I think what bothered me about the threat of the white walkers was how they would have been absolutely smoked if the army of the living had been even marginally smart about how they prepared for and carried out the battle. I was overwhelmed with a feeling of incredulity throughout the episode that I could never quite overcome.

We turned the lighting in the room down. Problem solved.

Fantastic episode and sets the bar high for what can be done on the small screen.

So many complaints in this thread, and then proposed alternatives make no sense. Like I said before, people are getting upset the show isn't doing things the way crappy shows would do them.
The Night wants to wipe out humanity and all memory of it, which is why he wanted to kill the Three-Eyed Raven.

...why wouldn’t he care about Cersei and the more than one million people who live in King’s Landing?

we dont know the reason NK wanted to kill the Three-Eyed Raven as an objective. we could speculate on all types of theories:
  • revenge at his former creators and an attempt to wipe them out
  • absorbing the life of the Three-Eyed Raven could mean the raven cant bring back the children of the forrest
  • it could mean the loss of all knowledge that Three-Eyed Raven has accrued
  • it could mean the NK gains all of the accrued knowledge of Three-Eyed Raven
  • Three-Eyed Raven could be the Lord of Light and NK killing him would mean the war is won/lost.
  • etc

Kind of my thought too. He should have taken Viserion straight to the capital.

... Or taken his dragon anywhere really.

Worst zombie apocalypse ever!

Don't really care about the Night King's motives, or what Bran was doing while he was "away". Now left wondering how the hell the next three episodes will pan out.
My guess. Double-crossing the double-crossed, people spying on each other, blades slitting throats, heads being cut off, blah blah blah.

We actually do its stated several times he wants to erase the world of men and Bran or the Three Eyed Raven is its memory

The dark scenes didn't bother me as I figured it was intentional, leaving your imagination to wonder what exactly went on as the fire-wielding blades, one by one, were extinguished by...something.

So that part was done rather well. I also think most don't have their sets calibrated for the episode, either and could have contributed to the problem. Who knows, but I liked the way it was done. Style-wise, this episode is easily on par with a high budget movie.

I liked this episode a lot. Really built up a sense of dread. Had no problems with the lighting on my projector.

However, the killing of the Night King had a deus ex machina quality. I don't understand why Arya was apparently easily able to get into the Godswood (which was full of undead at that moment), while Jon Snow was unable to pass the undead dragon that was apparantly guarding the entrance?

A girl makes no noise? They did show her sneaking up on John in the Godswood in that exact same place earlier in the season.

I don't think the Lord of the Light has anything to do with rest of the series, the iron throne or who sits on it. It was just about the fight against the undead.

Jon was revived to lead the fight and inspire allies and foes to join.
Beric was revived to ultimately save Arya in the halls.
The Hound was given visions to inspire him to fight (for Arya).
Melisandre was needed to remind Arya of her role.

Mel's death likely signaled the end of the Lord of the Light's involvement.

There will be a deleted scene on the blu-ray, where the NK gives Cercei ice crabs.

Yeah, Arya was the one character I had no trouble tracking in this episode. She knows Winterfell as well as anyone, so even though her springboard leap was a bit surprising I didn't have a hard time believing she got to where she needed to be. She was the only with who had the tools, the skill, the will, and the knowledge to get the job done.
