Sony has a habit of saying shipped = sold. I agree.

21M sold doesn't sound right at all at this point in time. Close to 20M, maybe, but if the PS3 really had crossed the 20M mark "in the wild" I think Sony would have been shouting it from the rooftops.

If they can slide in a price cut, then I could see things improving.

That announcement isn't "shouting it from the rooftops"?

Not really, it is buried in PR about selling to Latin America. Shouting from the rooftops would be a special press release talking only about this.

My guess is they are using last Q's shipped figures (which incidentally stood at 21.3m).

Saprano, 28 million shipped...You are guessing, you have nothing to back that up (Proove it, but not with your "thoughts", link please from a reliable source).....Nuff Said

You guys can say what you want. The article says Sold. That’s good enough for me. Speculating means nothing. Trashing the articles accuracy is petty, claiming that its inaccurate. There are always devils advocates.

I am sitting here in a hotel roon at Ceasars Windsor, with nothing better to do right now at 8:30am. Gamling is like beer. I dont start until noon

- Max has access to much better numbers than most.

- When I said Sony has a habit of saying "sold" when they mean "shipped", I wasn't kidding. Go look at that hoopla they made about Casino Royale on Blu-ray when it they said it "sold" 500,000 copies. More pertinently, they pulled similar shenanigans when the PS3 first launched.

Sure, we're guessing, but they are educated guesses based on past history and a feel for current trends in console sales.

Oh dear. Sony get there numbers from there quarterly/yearly accounts which they have to file by law. Up until about a year ago Sony used shipped numbers as to record the expenses in there accounts. Now they use sold to retail and record shipped and those sitting in warehouses differently. As of the end of last quarter Sony had sold 21.3m PS3's to retail. Probably over 22m by now but Sony wont know until the accounts are crunched at the end of March. I doubt global corporations are into fanboyism the numbers they say are 100% accurate and always have been.

What the hell does 'fanboyism' have to do with this discussion?

Sony used to call shipped numbers sold. I didn't know that they had stopped doing this. In so doing they are seriously bucking the trend, most companies use shipped and sold interchangably.

I had a look and 21.3m sell through is wrong, I don't know which countries they are counting and what data they are using, but it doesn't match up with anything I can see. I can't get more detailed than that, but PS3 sell-through is under 21m and by a fair amount too. Unless GfK are giving Sony data I can't see (which is very unlikely) this is the shipped figure to the end of December 2008.

I expect WW shipments for the three months ending 31/3/09 to be quite a bit lower than expected, just enough for Sony to meet their fiscal target...

At the end of Dec sell through stood at [edit] WW, I can't see Sony selling [edit] consoles in two notoriously slow months. Shipments were 21.3m though.

MS have shipped 28.5m 360s, it was in their last quarterly filing.

Edit: Sorry, can't give out real numbers apparently, ****ing chartzzzz website will steal them or so I'm told...

It's splitting hairs.

Either way, the PS3 is gaining on the 360. The gap created by releasing the 360 a year earlier is getting smaller and smaller.

There's a reason why Microsoft has been cutting the price of their console so aggressively. And why they hurl buckets of money at 3rd parties to secure exclusives. The media constantly reports that the 360's glossy black competitor is dead and always has been, but Microsoft's actual actions as a company say otherwise.

If I was Microsoft, I'd be awefully nervous that a console which sells for more money than mine is steadily gaining on me no matter what I do.

shipped does = sold anyway, because it's the only datta you can go by anyway, along with store's reordering more system's. take NPD for instance they do not get "Walmart's" sale through data, which would be saying something because Walmart do sell lot's of electronic's. So that's Data that NPD does not get. So it's a guess, Even Sony can only go by ORDER'S per store, per region to give them an idea of how much has sold in a week, day, month, year. and that is if they have all the Data, shipped system's out to store's with "reorder" of more system's at least gives you an idea how much you have sold.

As for the PS3 gaining ground, it's showing strong demand for the system despite the price. does it currently sell more than the other system's, My guess no, just because the economic problem's and the PS3's price is not as low as people would like for it to be.

Demand is still there for the system, and it's not a matter of IF people want the PS3, it seems In my Opinion, it's a matter of When the price gets to the point that people will buy the system. because the PS3 has Quite a number of game's now that many people have interest in so as long as the PS3 gets games that interest people, the people will buy when they want to buy a PS3.

What i have seen, it's only a matter of WHEN not IF it's just my OPINION that the Demand is there , the price for some people is just not there yet.

I think it's an easy guess that the PS3 will be seeing a price drop.

They've already extended it going into last christmas at the same price point. They're not going to go another year. And if they can reach down as low as $299, their sales are really going to take off. Especially now that they've gotten their other ducks in a row.

In fact, I tend to think that's all part of the plan. Sony is sitting on top of a lot of potential energy here which they've been carefully setting up.

Good job Sony. Hoping more will utilize the power of the PS3 when the price drop occurs.
