Sony:* ‬21* ‬Million PS3*‬s Sold Worldwide !

Sony has announced that the PS3* ‬has amassed global sales above* ‬21* ‬million.*

As part of the Sony's announcement regarding its bid to launch hardware across* ‬Latin America,* ‬the firm claimed that life-to-date sales of the PS3* ‬were now at* ‬21.3* ‬million.

The company also stated that* ‬the* ‬PlayStation Network has amassed* ‬17* ‬million registered accounts,* ‬though this was given as a whole number and not specifying if it included duplicate accounts and/or* ‬excluded PSP accounts and accounts activated on the* ‬PSN website.

Last week, Sony announced that total worldwide sell-in units of the PSP had surpassed the 50 million mark.

of course the gaming media will say its still behind the the 360...but they won't compare year to year sales or state that the 360 has been out at least year longer..

Meh I couldn't care less how many 360's have sold. As long as the PS3 keeps selling very well like it is I will continue to get what I want from it (Lots of great games, content, updates, features, etc).

I don't even know how many 360's have sold now...30 mil?

Well I suppose it is good news. But a lowering in price is inevitable if Sony wants to catch up with the competition. In the meantime, nice !

Sony is selling 10 million PS3's a year while the 360 is selling around 9 million a year or less?...

I'd bet that this is 21.3 million PS3s shipped, rather than sold. Especially given their tendency to use shipped and sold interchangably.

Sony has a habit of saying shipped = sold. I agree.

21M sold doesn't sound right at all at this point in time. Close to 20M, maybe, but if the PS3 really had crossed the 20M mark "in the wild" I think Sony would have been shouting it from the rooftops.

If they can slide in a price cut, then I could see things improving.

Not really, it is buried in PR about selling to Latin America. Shouting from the rooftops would be a special press release talking only about this.

My guess is they are using last Q's shipped figures (which incidentally stood at 21.3m).

Well I'm on my 3rd because of RRoD and my brother's crapped out on him yesterday so he may be getting another. So that figure doesn't seem that good to me when you compare with the fact that you don't hear so much about people buying multiple PS3's because of failure (multiple PS3's for different rooms is a different matter )

Yeah my guess is a price drop would equal exponential growth if chosen correctly. If it became priced to compete directly the major BD players on the market it will sell like hotcakes.

- Max has access to much better numbers than most.

- When I said Sony has a habit of saying "sold" when they mean "shipped", I wasn't kidding. Go look at that hoopla they made about Casino Royale on Blu-ray when it they said it "sold" 500,000 copies. More pertinently, they pulled similar shenanigans when the PS3 first launched.

Sure, we're guessing, but they are educated guesses based on past history and a feel for current trends in console sales.

At the end of Dec sell through stood at [edit] WW, I can't see Sony selling [edit] consoles in two notoriously slow months. Shipments were 21.3m though.

MS have shipped 28.5m 360s, it was in their last quarterly filing.

Edit: Sorry, can't give out real numbers apparently, ****ing chartzzzz website will steal them or so I'm told...
