Default Is it worth getting with 1080i? Can someone please help me.

Hey guys, I am thinking about getting a dvd blu ray player. I currently have a 46 inch LCD samsung 1080i, and a dvd player that has HDMI . I have heard that blu ray looks best on 1080p, but it can also run on 1080i. My question is this: Will I notice a huge difference from a dvd player with HDMI to a blu ray player playing blu ray movies while using a 1080i TV. I am basically wondering if it is worth buying a blu ray player with an 1080i TV. Thanks

Yes. No matter which way you slice it, 720p, 1080i, 1080p, you're still watching a film that has 6 times the resolution of a regular DVD, and those (up until high def) looked pretty damn good. A lot of people won't notice the difference between 1080i and 1080p anyway. The difference between upconverted SD DVD's and Blu-ray is huge.

For starter, Blu-ray players aren't "DVD Blu-ray players", just simply Blu-ray players. Through the HDMI input it does upconvert DVD's very nicely, and honestly unless you're sitting very close to the screen, you will not see a difference between 1080i and 1080p at your tv's size.

Thanks for your response, but one more question, I don't have a standard DVD player, but a DVD player with HDMI, I was wondering if a blu ray player was a lot better (and worth it) then a dvd player that has hdmi on 1080i. Thanks again for taking the time to respond to my question.

Agreed, I bought an up-scaling HDMI DVD player with the hopes of my DVD's looking HD. Too me upscaling is a joke when compared to blu.

Go for the BD player, you will not regret it!

Sorry about that, I should have realized what I typed. So you are saying that I probably won't be able to tell the difference with a HDMI dvd player vs a blu ray player on a 1080i tv? Thanks again.

That's still a standard DVD player. There's still the same amount on the disc no matter what kind of output it has. There's really no comparison between the upconverting players and a true HD source, ie, Blu-ray. Unless you have a REALLY pristine transfer on a DVD (and even still, there's a dramatic improvement between Blu-ray and DVD), standard DVD's will look like garbage after you've watched a few movies on Blu-ray, to the point where many of us have stopped buying DVD.

He's saying you won't be able to tell a difference between 1080i or 1080p on that size screen. You'll notice a huge difference between a standard DVD player and Blu-ray.

Look at it this way, how much of a difference can you tell between 720p and 1080i? Little to none depending on your visual accuity. Most likely will see less than that much difference for 1080p.

I use my BD player at 1080i and it is astounding none-the-less. HDMI only gives me some more color hues and 24fps if I could use it.

No, there is a big difference. When you're watching Blu-ray, you're looking at a high definition image which for the most part is very sharp, has luscious colors, great contrast among other benefits. When you're watching upconverted DVD's, you can tell the source is not hi-def. I believe it's very noticeable. Well especially with higher screen sizes.

I recently owned a 1080i Sony, but just moved to a 1080p set in the Sceptre. I have not had it long enough to see a difference, but I think because of the difference in size I will notice a difference. I plan to return the Sceptre in 90 days and purchase a 52" Sony XBR4 which is also 1080p and at that size I think the 1080p v. 1080i will be more apparent.

Any time heyimpat, that's why we're here.

I see how you could get confused by my first response by the way. That's because I answered all of your questions in one sentence. Sorry about that.

The question is do you have a 720p TV that can do 1080i, or a 1080p TV

a DVD (720x480) will NEVER look as good as true high definition.

an upconverted dvd to 1080i will never look as good as a 1080i bluray movie.

because a upconvert is simulating high defintion...whereas a bluray 1080p is simply converting to interlace 1080i. the real deal.

I also have a 720p/1080i upconvert dvd player. Upconversion is noticably better, but it won't produce new details/clarity because they're simply not on the dvd. While the jump from standard dvd 480 to 720p/1080i upconversion is noticable to me, the difference between 720p/1080i upconversion and BR is night and day. I've tested 720p/1080i upconversion vs. 720p/1080i BR on the same TV... BR wins hands down. Get the BR player for sure.

I bought a Samsung 50" plasma that is 1080i. I was looking at the 1080p, and LCD, and everything. I personally found the picture on mine to be the best. I have stressed and stressed over upgrading to 1080p, but I cannot see a difference in picture quality. I have talked to every salesman available and they all have said that I would not notice a difference between the 2. BUT...when I do upgrade, which will be before December, I will be getting 1080p. Hope this helps, not sure if it did at all, but I doubt you will notice a difference between the 2.
