No but it’s mentioned in The Clone Wars once or twice.

I'm also sure it was on official LucasFilm bios and stories and backgrounds, not to mention what ILM called the shooting models. The canon SW books that have all the ships and droids and gadgets.

I don't remember anyone getting their knickers in a twist about Walrus Man and Yak Face getting their "names" changed.

Only a tiny amount of people truly care that Boba Fett's ship was once referred to as Slave I or that it continues to do so. Those that do care are predictably all over the place with the reasons why it needs to be the case and why the supposed change needs to be condemned.

Names traditionally have importance because they are what a thing or a person is most often referred to. Boba's ship was almost never referred to by a name. In this case, as it is with a few other things in GFFA, the importance of this name is purely down to its value as an indication that you're a "real" Star Wars fan, either through gleaning one of the very scarce references to it in ancillary material, or due to having "been there" when the toy was on the shelves. Having the ship officially referred to as Boba Fett's ship instead of Slave I devalues that person's Star Wars fan credentials.

Obi-Wan's ship
Luke's ship
Mara Jade's Ship
Emporer's Ship
Darth Vader's ship...
No, it's just dumb and isn't a needed change.

Changing the name of a ship is nothing compared to the changes done to the OT. Some people aren’t okay with Boba Fett’s ship having a different name but they’re fine with his voice being replaced by another actor?

The ship being changed makes no sense. It's been called the Slave 1 on toys and in books, comics, and video games for forty years. No one has said anything. But because it's Disney, they can't have a ship called Slave 1, because they're woke or something, I guess.

Morrison voicing Fett for his few lines in Empire and Jedi is in continuity with the other films in Lucas' saga, plus now the Mandalorian, so it makes sense.

You get some fans who are pissed off when walkers are referred to as AT-ATs (like they are that one time in Rogue One) by other fans, as the Empire and the Alliance would just refer to them as walkers. Like in the real world, armed forces in battle would just say that they were engaging with "tanks" or "armor" and wouldn't quibble over the precise make and model. And they aren't all AT-ATs dontcha know.

Really, anyone trying to make out this is some kind of iniquity is really just talking about themselves and their credentials as a SW fan.

The voice of Boba was changed because the owners of Star Wars decided it would be better that way........

For me the issue is less about making sense and more about preserving a piece of art. It would make sense if Francis Ford Coppola hired Robert De Niro to replace all of Marlon Brando’s lines in The Godfather since De Niro played him in Part II, but it would be ridiculous and unnecessary.

Boba Fett did not sound like Temeura Morrison in Attack Of The Clones. So there was no need to preserve continuity when they changed it in 2004. It was a choice.

Given last year’s incident, is it really THAT surprising that Disney doesn’t want a product out there with the word “slave” in it?

I can’t say with 100% surety but I’d be willing to bet that the executives at Lucasfilm and Disney were NOT sitting around thinking “ok, guys, let’s not call it the Slave I.. just to piss people off! Mwah ha ha ha haaa!”

There’s no need to take these things so personally.

That's very different because you have two different actors playing the same character decades apart. Vito wouldn't sound like his younger self when Brando was playing him anyway.

I guarantee you if they could, they'd digitally alter Leia's slave girl costume. Another ridiculous atrocity they've committed to the Star Wars brand - stopping production and all but eliminating that outfit in print and memorabilia. People complain about Lucas makes changes to HIS films, but are okay with names and characters being changed and entire sections of the galactic story being erased under the Disney regime.

"So what's in the pipeline this month? Boba Fett's ship in Lego. Nice. Hmmm. Why is it called Slave I? .....neither he nor Jango were slaves...... Did Jango ever trade slaves?...... No?...... Is it in the movie? ..... Do the movies refer to it as that? ...... Well where and when then?....................................That's it?!!! ...... Do we absolutely need to put "Slave I" on a toy box, or anywhere else for that matter then?...... Right then Boba Fett's ship will do. After all that's how bigger, more important character's ships are known. The Falcon is the obvious exception.."

If you didn't make the choice and the effort to be scandalised by this stuff you'd be downright bored by it. If anything.

Star wars mentions slaves a few times.
Hell, there's even Slave Leia.
Why all the big "hub-bub" about a ship?

I'm in I.T.
The technical term for hooking hard drives together is Master and Slave.
There isn't anything inherently bad about the terms.

Yeah. Despite what some people try to make out, it's not a condemnation of the word "slave". It's having a second thought about throwing the word around because it sounds cool as the name of a cool character's cool spaceship.

Now if Lucasfilm wants to expand on the nature of the ship itself and explicate how it's actually just a module that is linked to a much larger ship and cannot operate independently, meaning that something else is controlling Boba's ship remotely, then it might be totally fine. But it isn't and that's not going to happen.

As for Leia. She's not referred to as a slave in the movie (or the novelisation IIRC). She is discovered freeing Solo from the carbonite and then kept captive by a crime lord. Leia's supposed "slave" status isn't being bandied about frivolously and gratuitously. People might think that the motives for writing that she is made to dress that way are questionable. And they might be right. But that's been said for almost forty years. And Kennedy has stated outright that they do not intend to go back and change anything in the first six movies.

Also. It's not a hub-ub about the ship. The lego ship was released relatively quietly and it did not have "Slave I" on the box so some fans decided to create the hub-ub about it. The overwhelming majority of people would not and still don't care or give the toy box a second look.
