AT&T is rumored to break even after 18 months with the iPhone. That means they make ~$510 profit over the life of your contract, IF you actually kept it 24 months, and I doubt anyone does...

AT&T is giving a good deal, Apple = fail (as usual).

that is terrible. me and my girl pay 97 plus some tax and fees comes out to 104 per month for TWO iphones with two data plans after employee discount. you are paying 85 for a single line damn. a cost cutting choice would be to get rid of that additional text msging plan option. there are free apps that allow texting and its just the same which is what i use instead of paying at&t money for 100-200 texts. another option is to change your voice plan to a lower amount of minutes. you cannot cancel the data portion of your plan at all.

Most of the complaints I hear about the iPhone are AT&T's fault rather than Apple, and I hear a lot. Hardware wise, the iPhone is solid. And AT&T's iPhone plans are hardly a good deal.

Yep, while I don't personally like Apple the iPhone is a good phone. AT&T has been handling their network horribly though and didn't anticipate the amount of people that would flood their data services.

Oh noes... a company making money? Anything but that... why would they ever want to make money and keep people employeed to fuel the economy...

That's crazy talk!

Companies should just run as charities and give everyone an immediate 900% increase in pay!!

Seriously... once you understand economics, you'll understand why AT&T has to charge so much for it, not only that: {as someone previously stated} if you don't like what's in the contract when you sign for the phone, then DON'T SIGN THE CONTRACT!

It's pretty-much that simple.

You don't NEED the Iphone {for those that do have it} you WANT the Iphone, there's a subtle {actually it's anything but} difference between the two. You can get a phone that has pay-as-you-go capabilities and just exist off of that, most people who've I've seen with Iphones {even business professionals} don't NEED it, it's a status symbol for people who can't afford a Benz.

What's even more funny is to have people sign the contract {which was never hidden from the customer} and then b**ch about the price of the contract. Endlessly. It's not only annoying, it also makes you look kinda stupid for signing something without full understanding of what was going on. {or simply READING the contract}

Why would I be crazy? If somebody doesn't need unlimited minutes, then that doesn't seem like that great of a deal, especially considering you've got no data on a phone that is pretty much worthless without data. Like a V6 Mustang with Cobra badges on it to me, but, to each their own.

Same boat here.... but last year. I liked my wife's iPhone so much.... I got one to be my very first cellular phone! I hate phones with a passion. I don't talk on them if I can help it. But the iPhone was like an awesome little micro tablet that I could carry in my pocket. Two iPhones cost us about $150 a month. We each have a 1500 text plan and I don't know how many minutes, but it's way more than either of us ever use.

Unlimited text isn't included as part of unlimited data? That's kind of odd.

No it's not because "I thought" when you switch to the iPhone you get unlimited text, but no... I still have 200 text for $5. I hope I don't need to upgrade to the next one which is 1,000 text for $10 (I Think)

Just keep in mind those monthly totals are usually a combined REC/SENT. So I would upgrade to unlimited if you get a lot of text messages.

My plan fro T-Mobile has unlimited text/email and I'm currently at 377 and it was reset on 1/3/10.

Do emails count as data or messages for your plan?

Not really trying to start an argument, but how does that have anything to do with what I originally posted? I'm very aware of what AT&T charges their iPhone customers, hence why I said the OP could get basically the same thing about about $60 a month by unlocking the phone and going with T-Mobile.
