I was at my local electronics store last night and engaged in a discussion with the sales clerk about HD and BD, i stated that i was a BD fan, well he got a little silent, i was telling him that BD was winning in just about every market by generally a 2-1 margin. Well, he shot back "well HD-DVD is winning in Africa." he also said some un-PC reasons why the are winning. he said that HD has more advertising down there. I thought this was halarious and walked out of the store. FYI i asked him about the war at the store, he said it was about 50/50

I'm more interested in the unPC things that were said as to why HD DVD was winning Africa myself.

Well I'm sure he can't even prove his facts ! His statement about "poor" people is stupid, when you know that maybe only the "rich" countrys in Africa, like South Africa, can afford it, and that they aren't "THAT" poor people !
And anyway, if it's true, I think HD-DVD may be leading by 1.1/1... It's still leading ! But he never told any margin :P |

Maybe that's because I import most of my BDs from the US
![]() ![]() But seriously, Switzerland is doing fine now. First there was a definitive slant towards HD DVD, but that's changed with most retailers showing good support for blu-ray and even the German press is (slowly) catching on. |

Not everybody here endorses the 'I'm neutral' mantra so many politicians like to hide behind. There was a time when neutrality meant something (as in human rights and social thinking), but nowadays it's just another phrase...

That is good news for Africa. From what I gather HD-VMD was being touted as the HD format for the developing world... so it's a definite step up for Africa.
So HD-DVD is now the format for the developing world... Good luck to it and I hope it well. However in the developed world (with more spending power) BD is the way to go, the additional benefits are definitely worth it. |

I'm curious what these reasons were as well.
I'm also curious why it would be hilarious to think HD DVD has advertising in some African nations. There are a number of developed countries on the continent with very sophisticated tastes and consumption styles much like the majority of developed first-world countries. The "hilarity" of thinking HD DVD is winning Africa stems not from viewing them as a small market, but having this backwards, and incorrect, notion that looks at Africans not as people living (or, realistically, struggling to live) in the 21st century. Let's be clear: if you picture a tribal bushman when you hear "Africa," you have a very naive and limited view of the world. Sure, there are portions of the continent, and far too many of them, that make the worst neighborhood you've ever lived in look like Beverly Hills. But it is equally true that there are wealthy gated communities in nations like Kenya and Nigeria (just for starters) that are more lavish than you can imagine, and likely more lavish than your own standard of living. I'd be comfortable thinking that they'd be the kinds of folks interested in HDM. Now, to convince them that they should own Blu-Ray... Last edited by mykevermin; 12-05-2007 at 12:49 PM. |
