Default The missing link to winning this war...1080p TVs.

1080p TVs. There. I said it. I purchased a PS3 for a number of reasons -chief among them being that it was such an outstanding deal and I'll take a Sony product over a MS-backed product anyday.

So why do I only own one BD? Simple. I only have a Samsung 1080i/720p TV. Last month my neighbor showed me his middle-of-the-road 47" (42"?) 1080p Phillips (6000:1 contrast) and it was AWESOME. At $1,600, however, justifying the cost is a hard pill to swallow but man do I ever want one.

So now it's a waiting game. I want to know where the deals on the 1080p TVs are, or more precisely, WHEN. If Blu-Ray wants to win this war, then its getting the TVs into houses that tips the scales. I've chosen sides since last December. Sony and co. need to recognize that there are MANY like me out there that could cause a seismic shift in sales if we were to be given enough incentive to buy one. Sony and company need to find a way to complete the chain.

Blu-Ray Disc Player----1080p TV------End user/Early adopter investment

Being fiscally/financially responsible stinks .

Enlighten me, people. I know you "gots the goods". My wife is bugging me to get 300 (she likes it more than I do!) anyway. . .

I threw financially responsible out the window last December and bought a 1080p TV for $3000... the same TV is now out for $1800 (this is Canadian $). Oops. But it's still cool hehe.

I'm glad I didn't break down and get the 46" 768p TV the wife wanted to get instead for the same price hehe.

It's kinda weird though... only one of my friends owns a PS3... and he doesn't have an HDTV!!

ITS REALY ABOUT GETTING HD into people's houses.any HD..and SONY and Samsung are both doing deals with Walmart for this 2007 fall season to get HD TV's along with a blu-ray player into people's home's that are priced in the lower cost. yes those tv's WOULD NOT BE 1080p their 720p but they are priced below $500.00 that its getting people ready for HD in the US 36", AND 42" 720p

It's funny because my sister just purchased a PS3 last week. She plugged it in via HDMI to her 50" 1080i/720p (768 native resolution) HDTV and went "Huh? Why does it look better on your TV than mine? They're the same size!"

I own a 1080p 50" TV, and yes, the difference in clarity between the two resolutions is remarkable, to say the least. Even a non-videophile like my sister can tell the difference.

P.S. Your wife probably just likes the "300 six-packs"

I hate to hear this! I just paid off my 720p, 50" Panasonic last December with an interest free, two-year credit plan. Now I have to find someone to take this sucker off me for some cash. But you can buy the same TV, at 1080p, for nearly half the price, so it won't be easy to unload.

Blu-ray should still be very impressive on a 1080i or 720p set. There is a difference between 1080i and 1080p, but to most people, it's not a night and day difference. Your neighbor's set really shouldn't make yours look that bad. What type of TV do you and your neighbor have? DLP, LCD, Plasma, RPTV? Also, how do you have everything hooked up?

my last set was a 42" 1080i set from Sony and Blu-Ray still looked great on it. Not as good as my new 60" 1080p set, but nonetheless great. i'm just a perfectionist so i had to have the best possible. but yes, i agree....the foundation needs to be set with affordable HDTVs.

Simply put, 720p is half the pixels of 1080p

So in other words you're paying half again for twice the TV

So why aren't you buying BDs? Are you stil buying movies on DVD?? So you prefer to watch upconverted 480i (still 480i) to downconverted 1080p (becomes 720p)?

Get it (watch for any overcranked sharpness settings tho ) . Really, you have a 720p TV, that's 4 times SD 480i man. Fill up those pixels!

1080p displays are nice and 2X better but no need to do w/o high resolution if you have a 720 now!

Ya no kidding.. DVDs are not hi def on any system. A Blu-ray disc is hi def on a 720p tv. It is not as good as 1080p but a Blu-ray on a 720p will smoke a DVD upside down. I started buying BD on my 720p before I got my 1080p.

Default Interesting responses...

However you slice it, though, once you've seen 1080p on larger than 40", it's like trying to convince yourself that diet coke and coke taste the same (HAR!). Right now I have coke zero (720p/upscaling on DVDs which is a bit more impressive on the PS3 than I ever thought it could be) which is ok, but it still ain't coke.

In the end this is half rant/half suggestion for the Blu-Bloods to rally to get those 1080p TVs down in price and in our houses! Old news and common sense.

I have a 1080i TV and I get Blu-ray anytime it's an option. It looks a whole lot bettter than original DVD. And when I do get a 1080p screen, it'll be all the better.

just a quick FYI not sure how this is across most places, butw here i work its a pretty rich area. Alpharetta, in GA.

Nearly every tv i sell is a 1080p set especially if its 40" or above in lcd. I dont actually recall selling a 720 set anytime in the last 3 months. Other associates tho may have, just not myself.

As for plasma tho, its a dif story. most of the plasma's sold are 720p. People just dont wanna ussualy bite on the 1080's for some reason. go figure. As for PTV.. 1080 or bust where im at.
