Default Do you think Blu-ray standalones will overtake HD DVD standalones before CES

Wot i m reading here these days that the Blu Ray player standalone are selling extremely well and they are moving units pretty fast and after the HD DVD units are selling for normal price of >$200 they are not competing Sony and other Blu Ray players.

So as far as i remember end of November HD DVD standalone units quantity was standing around 480k and BluRay had i think around 350k units sold. So over the x-mas rush do you think this difference of 150k (i m taking the upper bound) difference.?

What i m reading here i think this may very well happen.. and i think this last so called advantage HD DVD have should also fall before the CES and we may very well be hearing abt it on CES by Blu Group.?

Or you think this is not possible.? actually i thought abt this cuz if in one day sale Walmart can move 100k units then in the x-mas rush Blu Ray can surely move 200k units if the advertisment compaign has been successful. (and i m not expecting much unit movement by HD DVD... around 50k. so 200k - 50k = 150k)

ps. dp we get standalone player sold figures by any independent group.?

I dont think overall sales will be higher, but they have already started closing the gap, and that gap will close quickly. More bluray players are being sold than HD DVD players in my store easily about 10-1

It is a fact that Blu-Ray players have begun to outsell hd dvd stand alone players.

Since black friday there have been 200+ players sold in one BB and 11 hd dvd players. I will admit that store is beyond pro blu. Every employee there either owns a PS#/Stand alone player or plans on getting one. There are 2 that started as red and now own blu and lean towards blu

It will overtake hddvd players as a whole VERY soon. I have 2 friends that bought standaloneBlu players over HD DVD in the last 2 weeks and im thinking Im going to buy one myself in the next few months so I can use my ps3 strictly for gameplay and other things.

On another note it is amazing how much BluRay movie shelf space has started to grow as opposed to the fast shrinking hddvd shelf space in most stores.

The 2 best buys I frequent in particular both have about 3 to 4 times the shelf space of hd-dvd now instead of the equal space they had just 6 months ago.. its a beautiful thing =]

Considering a lot of CE companies are bundling their Blu-ray players with their HDTVs, it could happen. Toshiba seems like it is only going to be able to bundle their players with their TVs. Lots of TVs will be going on sale near the first of the year with the Superbowl and all.

I don't think 100k - 150k is a lot of difference if sale picks up.

Actually it will be good to get some hard numbers on how many high def players are getting sold per week between Black Friday to X-mas.?

In the short term, it's moot, my theory is that the PS3 in some cases is being used as dedicated blu-ray players. It might be a fraction of the total PS3s sold, but compared to the standalone units, this is still a very big number.

This is something that should be apparent from tracking the movie sales so far this year.

I guess it really varies at BB. A friend of mine works there and he says that Red outsells Blu about 3:1. He is a Blu fan but says that the Toshis sell out as soon as they can get them in. Meanwhile, the Sony S300s are starting to move but they have a lot in inventory and unfortunately a LOT of them being returned because of old firmware issues. The buyers don't want to deal with firmware upgrades and are irritated by the slow loading times of the new players.

I think that the end of Q1 will see the standalones ahead of the Reds, and this will just exponentially increase as all of the other CEs get in on the game and drop their prices as well.

In the scheme of things the number of standalone HD-DVD is not great. This will be easily overhauled by dedicated BD players early next year.

Then HD-DVD will die .

I think that bd will overtake hd-dvd in Q1 in pure standalones. It will take a little time to gain ground on the 270k xbox 360 drives out there, but all indicators since September (minus the firesale) is that BD standalones ares selling better than hd-dvd ones.

I'm dying to know the sales figure for BD standalone this week with the deep price cut on Sony and Samsung going on right now at major retails and internet.
