So I just watched Episode IV for the first time this morning. I've never actually seen any of the OT all the way through before. Unfortunately I had to watch the SE version. I don't understand Lucas' decisions for which scenes had CGI added. The version I saw at least had a combination of traditional model work/stop animation and CGI that looked obviously out of place for the age of the film.
I also didn't think it was that amazing of a movie. Maybe it was because of all the years of hearing about how great the OT is, but that usually doesn't effect my judgment of older films. I thought the lightsaber duel was weak and Hamill's acting was pretty stale. I also thought Vader would be a little more menacing and have a more powerful presence than he actually had. Don't get me wrong, however. I still thought it was an above average film. I'm holding out hope that V and VI will wow me. Last edited by DreamScar; 05-26-2011 at 09:35 PM. |

It did push the envelope at the time as what was possible and revived a lot of Sci-Fi in general. Oscar worthy in 1977? The music and FX were Oscar worthy. Acting?Direction?Best Picture? Meh. But still (The OT) on my short list of movies... |

I'm still looking forward to the other two films. I've heard EST is the best of the trilogy so hopefully it will fulfill my expectations. |

Then you didn't really watch the film. Nobody likes those SE monstrosities.

Yeah, films really shot through a growth spurt from Star Wars to Raiders. My memory of the 1977 audience was this: the chess sequence got one of the biggest reactions, both from the hologram pieces to the 'let the wookie win' punchline. Those walking pieces really blew everyone away at the time, as little screen time as they had. There was also huge reaction when that trash compactor monster stuck his head up. People flipped on that as well. It's hard to fathom, because that stuff is so pedestrian nowadays. And for sure the craziest reaction during that period was the chest burster from Alien. That took the cake by a country mile, but is yawnable by today's standards. |

I did not see the films until 1990 when I saw the 1st film Star Wars A New Hope that on VHS and then I became a fan then because I was born in july 83 after ROTJ came out. I remember when I saw it in 1997 the Special Edition of Episode 4 A new hope on the big screen at my local theater in Ohio I was in star wars heaven and I said that this the way tp see star wars on the big screen. I loved the film even more and after that I saw all the prequels film on opening day at my local theater and I've loved star wars ever since.

(Which is how everyone described it at the time, since we were just starting to notice Old Movies in the three years since "That's Entertainment", and hit just the right zeitgeist in the Carter era.) On that level, "Star Wars" (the one film, not "Episode IV"), in the same way that Empire Strikes Back got divided reactions from audiences-- Quote:
![]() So, yes: Star Wars, Oscar-worthy in 1977. (And so was Annie Hall, but not Julia.) Empire in 1980, nnno. For pretty much the same reason that everyone remembers the first Raiders of the Lost Ark, but not the other two. Last edited by EricJ; 05-27-2011 at 03:45 AM. |
