Perhaps, I should just stay away from this thread until Comic Con, and the big preview or announcement that is said to happen...

I am just tired of these endless arguments.

Who f%^ing cares? OK, you guys obviously do, so good luck to you.

Sorry, and out.
Bluyoda I agree with all of your posts about the blu-ray box set so don't call me a broken record. So take back what you said.

So I just watched Episode IV for the first time this morning. I've never actually seen any of the OT all the way through before. Unfortunately I had to watch the SE version. I don't understand Lucas' decisions for which scenes had CGI added. The version I saw at least had a combination of traditional model work/stop animation and CGI that looked obviously out of place for the age of the film.

I also didn't think it was that amazing of a movie. Maybe it was because of all the years of hearing about how great the OT is, but that usually doesn't effect my judgment of older films. I thought the lightsaber duel was weak and Hamill's acting was pretty stale. I also thought Vader would be a little more menacing and have a more powerful presence than he actually had.

Don't get me wrong, however. I still thought it was an above average film. I'm holding out hope that V and VI will wow me.

It was pretty amazing in 1977, but since then, the bar has been raised in acting, special effects, action scenes, overall production, etc.

It did push the envelope at the time as what was possible and revived a lot of Sci-Fi in general. Oscar worthy in 1977? The music and FX were Oscar worthy. Acting?Direction?Best Picture? Meh.

But still (The OT) on my short list of movies...

your doing it wrong... your analyzing it too much..

your supposed to think light sabers are the best weapon ever invented..
your also supposed to love how much of a badass darth vader is..
your supposed to think han solo is cool and suave...
you havnt met yoda yet but when you do it should be epic..
also r2d2 is halarious and c3PO's gold armore should make you

if you dont feel these things you will not like star wars.

oh and you have to pray for god to make you a Jedi.

That's the thing. I felt all of those except for Vader being such a badass. He just didn't feel like a super Nemesis to me. I figured he'd be less talkative and just be a dark powerful presence that would show up every now and then. He just felt like an above average bad guy to me. I also love lightsabers, but the first fight ever featuring them just felt timid and uninspired.

I'm still looking forward to the other two films. I've heard EST is the best of the trilogy so hopefully it will fulfill my expectations.

Acting? Are you referring to acting in general or just for SW films? As bad as Mark Hamill was Hayden Christensen is about 100 times worse all these years later. If you are referring to acting in general I can tell you that most of the greatest actors of all time came out of the golden age of Hollywood.

I think its pop culture saturation has kind of undone Star Wars. I used to love these movies when I was 10, now I'm kind of over the whole franchise because I've heard and seen everything too many times.

This could be it. I do pretty much know what's going to happen from all of the references and parodies.

Yeah, films really shot through a growth spurt from Star Wars to Raiders. My memory of the 1977 audience was this: the chess sequence got one of the biggest reactions, both from the hologram pieces to the 'let the wookie win' punchline. Those walking pieces really blew everyone away at the time, as little screen time as they had. There was also huge reaction when that trash compactor monster stuck his head up. People flipped on that as well.

It's hard to fathom, because that stuff is so pedestrian nowadays. And for sure the craziest reaction during that period was the chest burster from Alien. That took the cake by a country mile, but is yawnable by today's standards.

I did not see the films until 1990 when I saw the 1st film Star Wars A New Hope that on VHS and then I became a fan then because I was born in july 83 after ROTJ came out. I remember when I saw it in 1997 the Special Edition of Episode 4 A new hope on the big screen at my local theater in Ohio I was in star wars heaven and I said that this the way tp see star wars on the big screen. I loved the film even more and after that I saw all the prequels film on opening day at my local theater and I've loved star wars ever since.

I'll say it: Shredder in TMNT the original movie, was more badass than Darth Vader.

Done.

It WAS amazing in 1977, not only because of the "new" effects, but also because it played like an "old" Flash Gordon serial--
(Which is how everyone described it at the time, since we were just starting to notice Old Movies in the three years since "That's Entertainment", and hit just the right zeitgeist in the Carter era.)

On that level, "Star Wars" (the one film, not "Episode IV"), in the same way that Empire Strikes Back got divided reactions from audiences--

--Well, half of us didn't think so at the time. Although having Lawrence Kasdan give the Han/Leia romance a bit of 30's flair raised our hopes, it just didn't have the old-movie innocence that we all thought the first one did, got bogged down in its own storyline/preaching, and stripped the fun out of it. And Return of the Jedi?--Some here are old enough to remember the non-SE ending.

So, yes: Star Wars, Oscar-worthy in 1977. (And so was Annie Hall, but not Julia.) Empire in 1980, nnno.
For pretty much the same reason that everyone remembers the first Raiders of the Lost Ark, but not the other two.

Hey hold on here! We all remember The Last Crusade because Connery was bloody awesome!

Otherwise, have no problem with your post. It wasn't until I became a teenager that I started to like ESB, and even now am I only really starting to appreciate it (I'm 20 btw).

The same for me, originaly ESB was strange and boring.. Hey my initial reaction to Apocalypse Now was the same..now I love both movies..

You know what would have been great..If the new trilogy was directed by someone else..

Who would you have in the director's chair and why (Movie)

TPM - Spielberg - For ET
AOTC - ridley scott - For Blade Runner
ROTS - Coen Brothers - No country for old men
