But now that I've waited for these in HD since 2006, I'm thinking it's worth the 4.80 to just have them in hand on Friday. Also then I can watch them all weekend with my kids.
Thats what I plan on doing!

I've got to work from 7 am until 6pm and won't be able to stop by Target or Best Buy until then. I don't care all that much about the swag that's offered. I'm assuming nothing ridiculous like The Saga Box selling out is going to happen.

Is there *ANY* possibility of Lucas releasing the original theatrical versions of the the 1977, 1980, 1983 movies on Blu? Any hint of a chance of a rumor?
Best guesses would be:

2013 - If the fan demand is huge, Lucas might give in again.

2017 - 40th anniversay of Star Wars

2018 - Since 1997, every 7 years, Lucas tends to do a re-release (although with more tinkering included)

2027 -50th anniversary of Star Wars

After George Lucas dies - like with The Donner Cut of Superman II since Marlon Brando was no longer around to be a legal pain in the ass

I saw the first Star Wars at a theater in Great Falls, Montana in May 1977. I bought a ticket for the very first showing. There were maybe 20 people in the theater that had a capacity of around 400. It was a huge theater.

I went back the next weekend and could not get in and it stayed that way for at least 3 months. Still I was able to see the movie over the summer 26 times. I never got tired of it.

I was equally impressed with "The Empire Strikes Back" but wasn't too thrilled with the hanging storyline at the end. Mostly because I knew I would have to wait a few years to see how things turn out. I didn't see the movie as many times as the first one but I did go back a few times.

The third movie was a lot like the second but I absolutely hated the Ewok "Care Bears" (that's what they reminded me of at the time). The plot was okay but nothing to floor me like the first two did. At the time I remember thinking the overall story was starting to strain itself (or the author's creative ability to be more exact).

To me, the prequels were a disaster and nothing more need be said. I will not buy the Blu-Ray release primarily because the original movies are now gone and locked away in George's closet somewhere. Star Wars is dead. But I will always relish the memories of seeing the first two in the theater.

It would be the perfect criterion release. Doubtful, but it is my second biggest criterion dream
[Show spoiler]Godfather 1-3, in chronological order as once seen on AMC

Same here. There is a best buy where I could have in store pick up but it is 30 miles away and there are 5 other best buys that are closer.

I got ahold of the set early.... The original trilogy still looks absolutely atrocious. Like the 2004 DVD: Way oversaturated, and blacks are so crushed that I feel like I'm wearing sunglasses. But, that probably has more to do with Lucas' intentions than the Blu-ray transfer. Resolution looks strong, but it looks like the color correction was done in Final Cut Pro on a tight deadline or something.

At least they fixed the shot in A New Hope where Luke's lightsaber was green.

"I can't imagine these three films looking much better than they do here."

I was pretty baffled by that statement. If Lucas restored the original theatrical cuts and didn't do any silly color "correction," they would look far better. Lots of detail has been lost for the 2004 DVD and 2011 BD.

I think the theatrical cuts on the 2006 LE DVD release look good, except of course for the resolution and being non-anamorphic.

What are you looking at? I have seen the BD screen caps and the black crush has been all but eliminated.

I was just saying how regardless of, he's gonna be blamed for not including the old features.

Without being a fanboy or an apologist or a LFL employee (WE ALL WISHED WE WERE, specially the ones with professional frustrations), I feel that the old features weren't included since it is assumed you already owned them. Kinda like a bonus for you buying the old release.

After all, keeping a few extra DVDs isn't such a big deal. Seriously.

Maybe it's your display settings. Cause the majority of reports are indicating otherwise. Just a thought.

Sure doesn't look like it when you compare AOTC releases. Check out the "teal shift" set of photos, they get significantly darker and some shadow detail definitely looks lost.

Even if it's assumed you already own them, why would they assume you want to keep your DVDs? Keep a LaserDisc player, a VCR, Betamax player etc. just to have all the versions just for special features that could have easily been included?

Does not compute.

The reason George Lucas has refused to release the UOT is because it will undermine his ongoing efforts to revise the OT. The louder the fans ridicule his revisions, the more justified he'll feel for keeping the UOT under wraps. Once George Lucas has presented us with his "Final Cut" of the Star Wars saga, then he will feel comfortable enough to package it alongside the unaltered original versions.

The UOT (in a restored, definitive format) will not come before GL is finished tinkering, I guarantee you that.

The hilarious irony is this: Had it not been for all the anger and ridicule flung towards Lucas's revisions, he probably wouldn't have thought twice about releasing the UOT as a collector's item. But all that negativity towards his special editions has put him on the defensive.

I've been thinking the same thing.

I really like the looks of the UK set packaging. Wish Target or someone had a retailer exclusive like that with the complete saga bonus discs
