Personal taste .. But the simplicity and choreography of the ending battle in EP IV was WAY better than ROTJ ... It really felt like a dogfight in space, ROTJ was the beginning of the downfall for me .., the introduction of teddy bears, the more is better approach .. Etc etc.

Harry's Despecialized versions are pretty sweet ... No matte lines (boxes) , Han shoots first, no stupid CG additions etc etc.

Yes and that's how we love our Star Wars! Made with the best technology "at the time" it was created.

Just give me the cleanest HD transfer of all the boxes, imperfections just how I saw it in the theater back in the day and I will be just fine and dandy.

Funny thing about the matte boxes surrounding the ships in ROTJ, many people never notice them. Apparently they've always been there but whether or not you see them depends on the contrast settings of your TV. Have you tried calibrating your setup with the THX Optimiser?

Sometimes puppets look cheesy, but for me CGI always looks fake. Would rather the occasional bad puppet than a movie full of fake looking cartoons.

I've always noticed them since the VHS days. That and the see-through SnowSpeeder Cockpits.
AND the see-through Gargoyle in GhostBusters 1!

Yarrr. Ye have no idea what ye is talkin' about.

There are so many CG objects and characters in films & TV these days people don't notice. Why? Because they LOOK REAL.

Don't upset the CG tiger. He may eat you for saying he looks like a cartoon.

When I saw Revenge of the Sith in the Cinema, I didn't realize that the CloneTroopers were CGI.
I was shocked when I found out a few years later.

What about General Grievous? He is absolutely amazing as well, or Yoda in ROTS is just perfect.

I agree with PeterTHX, that most people look at CGI, and they would never know unless it's revealed to them in some way.

Watto and Poggle the Lesser are also fantastic in AOTC. Just look at Poggle the Lesser acting alongside the guys in masks, and he looks perfectly seamless in terms of compositing and texture/lighting.....
Too many to keep track off.

Yeah, sure. The contrast and brightness settings make a difference obviously.
It's also in TESB btw., and my system is calibrated.

You can't see them?

Those were very easy to tell that they were CG.

The most I can remember being impressed by cgi was HBO's miniseries John Adams.

Was the fist time (that I knew of) I had seen motion tracking on background mattes, and it seemed seamless to me. They recreated the shipyard and marketplace, the entire city of Boston and more, right behind the actors (actors being filmed in many cases with handheld or dollied cameras). I wasn't even aware until I saw the special features.

Granted, characters are more difficult. But that experience established my benchmark for how fx shoud be: If you can see them, they've failed.

Sometimes the CG is called for and works great. Other times you end up with extreme overuse witch bores the hell out of me ... Like in the prequel series, Jackson's King Kong , transformers, pacific rim etc etc etc

IMHO on location shooting is just better usually, locations ground the movie ... that's why Abrams is shooting the sequels mostly on location. No matter how good the CG is ... You can usually tell its CG ... Especially if you work in the field.

I think there are time when you cannot avoid using it ... Gravity or Prometheus come to mind ... But there are plenty of examples of ... Why didn't they just shoot it. ... As well. Watch the first Alien ... It's so cool because it feels real.

Then you have Andy Serkis trying to Bogart all the credit for Gollum and King Kong ... Ugh ...

Certain people keep harping on about how the practical FX in the OT are fake or cheesy, but IMO a lot of the CGI in the special editions of the OT and a lot of the CGI in the entire prequel trilogy also hasn't aged well.

Personally, I think the CGI effects in the special editions already look more dated than the original effects that they replaced.

Sorry, but that doesn't make any sense, since there are many characters and things put on the screen that can't be done in any other way, so if you have any knowledge of VFX you know they are CGI.

We should watch the Star Wars saga together, and you guys point out all the VFX you believe to be CGI, and the ones you think are practical.
That would be VERY telling, I am certain.

To me they looked CGI from the first moment I saw them. There is way too much CGI in the movie.

I agree and Yoda (the puppet work in ESB) is 100 times better than cgi Yoda in Sith.

Let's see that puppet walk, jump, fight, etc.

It's a nice muppet in Empire, but you just prefer one fake look for another.
