And I'm sick of folks using Rotten Tomatoes as the defining form of measurement. Thats like using the Oscars as the defining example for films.

I used to be an Empire guy but over time, the first installment has an honesty that gets lost in the other chapters.
yeah sites like Rotten Tomatoes are useless. who cares what other people think of a movie. all that matters is what you think.

A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back are truly in a class by themselves compared to the other Star Wars movies. The others really don't compare IMO. Empire is Star Wars at it's highest peak as it really expanded the universe and characters from the first movie.

Jedi is a bit of a letdown although I think it had a very satisfying ending and the Jabba The Hut sequence was good; it's just the entire middle 45 minutes and lesser acting performances from Hamill and Ford in particular which one has to bear. And couldn't Lucas have come up with something different instead of another Death Star?! The Star Wars Family Guy of Jedi (and the others actually) are a must see.

Yeah, there are pretty wide gaps between the best two, the pretty good two and the worst two.

I go back and forth about just how wide the gaps are and whether the middle two are better than just pretty good (ie better than most movies that aren't Star Wars or Empire) but the gaps never really get all that narrow.

Touche, but 2 or 3 in the course of an exchange doesn't work against someone who's doing it over "umpteen" (defined as many many more) pages over a stretch of some time which is what I'm referring to,e especially when it's responding to someone's question.

No, it isn't written in stone, it's just been trendy to say ESB is the "best" for the last few years. I love'em all, but I also like ANH better. The opening still to this day gives me goose bumps.

Actually ESB has been the street/public "favorite" since the OT ended.
Not just in last few years.
Even when it came out in the theatre my peers liked it better than Star Wars.
U get to see the first full on lightsaber/Jedi duel. Folks(SW fans)were waiting for that since ESB was announced/promoted.
Obi vs Vader in SW was cool but was also interrupted by the escape.

Same here. 'Holy shit, this one was even better' was a very common reaction in my circles. And that of course immediately led to discussions of whether we necessarily liked the better one more than the first one and so forth and so on.

Even if more people prefer one over the other, it still doesn't make it "set in stone". A popular opinion is still that - an opinion.

There is no set in stone.

But time always tells what remains. And ESB is still what i hear and read as the favorite. Thats not fact or truth, but just the masses speaking.

It still depends on who you ask. Many Star Wars fans cite TESB, sure, but I just as often hear SW, and occasionally even RotJ.

Who cares what the "masses" say? These things vary from person to person, and I personally don't care what anybody else thinks. My favorite is my favorite. Same should go for anybody else.

But we dont live in a vacuum. We should take heed to our peers and the masses.
We enjoy these films by ourselves and with others. Communal preferences do factor into this. Why even discuss this stuff if your only gonna listen to yourself?

As ive said before, i was an ESB dude but have switched over to SW. That doesnt diminish whatever popular status ESB has or make SW eclipse that popular opinion.

Take heed, sure, but not at the expense of having a mind of our own.

That's like saying everyone should agree that The Artist was the best film of 2011 because it won the Oscar. Or think that Citizen Kane is the best film of all time because it so often takes that place on many "best film" lists.

Of course you dont become a sheep. Thats not the story here.

No person is an island. Why discuss it if thats all that counts?

Taking heed and following arent the same.

Theres a popular vote and your vote. One doesnt negate the other.

The Oscars arent a popular vote. Its one groups vote that promotes itself on TV.

Discussion comes from differing viewpoints. What's the point if we're all just supposed to agree that something's the "best".

You can have a discussion even if it's 1000 vs. 1. The vast number of "popular" opinion doesn't make the minority opinion any less valid in the discussion.

What the masses say - or more specifically how long they've been saying it - is relevant to the question of whether the high regard in which they hold Empire is how they really feel or whether they're simply being 'trendy'.

If significant numbers of people have been expressing an opinion for decades that undercuts the idea they're merely jumping on a current bandwagon.

Which is not to say there hasn't been any bandwagon jumping. These kinds of things tend to ebb and flow and there are always people willing to follow crowds.

Discussion can also come from similar viewpoints as well.

No one is saying you have to agree with any individual or popular vote.

But u have to listen(to more than your opinion) if your open to discussion.
