What did I do? Look, ST has had 3 really good shows and ST is the best movie series of all-time, can't we just leave it at that and move on? How about a Carrie Fisher versus Natalie Portman argument?

True. And not because Star Trek is the best film ever made. It's not. It's not even as good as Star Trek II or VI, and it's still better than any Star Wars film, except Empire.

Excellent Film count:
Star Wars: 2 (I would argue 1, but I'm feeling generous )
Star Trek: 3 (at the VERY least, II, VI and XI are great films, though I could easily be swayed towards III and IV)

The number of great films is the criteria I would use, but for arguments sake:

Terrible Film count:
Star Wars: 4 (Eps I, II, III, CW)
Star Trek: 3 (V, VII, VIII, even though people LOVE First Contact, they are crazy IMO, so feel free to exchange I, IX or X)

Return of the Jedi, The Motion Picture, Search For Spock, Voyage Home, Insurrection and Nemesis, are passable I think. Watchable, but not great. That's the scoreboard as I see it. If we go by # of good films, Star Trek has it NAILED. If you need to include bad films in your judgments it becomes hazy, but still tipped in Trek favor.

Also, at it's best Star Trek has something to say about humanity. At Star Wars' best, we are all really entertained, but there's nothing relevant about it. (I take that back. The politics in the middle of Episode I's godawful dogsh*t were relevant, but everyone complained about the "boring parts", so that was chucked in II and III, leaving only pure dogsh*t.)

I also enjoy Star Trek more as I get older (the good films anyway) and Star Wars faaaaar less as I get older.

That's how I see it.

I'm going to give this a shot, this is, obviously, opinion, so put away your beatin' sticks.

1) SW: Empire Strikes Back
2) ST: Wrath of Khan
3) ST: First Contact
4) Star Trek (2009)
5) ST: The Voyage Home
6) ST: The Undiscovered Country
7) ST: Generations
8) ST: Insurrection
9) SW: Return of the Jedi
10) ST: The Search for Spock
11) Star Wars
12) SW: Revenge of the Sith
13) ST: Nemesis
14) SW: Attack of the Clones
15) SW: Phantom Menace
16) ST: The Final Frontier
17) ST: The Original Motion Picture

Personally I'd swap Voyage Home and Undiscovered Country but I don't think that's consensus (I'd also move Khan below Star Trek '09). If you take the six best Star Trek movies and the six best Star Wars movies, Star Trek wins 5-1, that's how I slice it personally. Also I'm not giving Star Wars any extra points for having only six movies, that was a choice, it could have had twenty by now.

PS. I want TARP money for NASA so it can build a Sovereign class starship, it'd be a better purchase.

I think you mean Jackie Chan v Jet Li, because there really is no comparison when it comes to Bruce Lee

I couldn't resist

Well, I'm 39 and I saw Star Trek TOS on TV when I was 12 (yeah it took 5 years to come to France), and I saw Star Wars a new hope years later on TV (was 7 when released in thaters so I was quite Dsney and the like).
TOS had great charismatic characters, often showing great resources or self sacrifice (of their ideals if not their health) and of improving oneself for the betterment of mankind. Of course the mesage appears in a science fiction / space opera setting, which remains in my preferred genres, so a mysterious creature or humanoid with godlike powers just threw some imaginary wolrd in, making it lively.
The chemistry of the characters is one of the best ever, Kirk the bold and tricky, Spock the serious and genius, Mc Coy the drunken doctor, Scotty the merry McGyver, Uhura, the black diplomatic girl, Chekov the fiery but obedient helmsman, Sulu, the cold and starightforward navigator ... and all these would sacrifice themselves for a friend or humanity anytime.
A them that is respected in TNG and DS9 and not that much in Voyager and Enterprise.
The 6 Motion pictures with Kirk team showed some variety (of course #5 will remain, well, huh, hmmm ......)and better SFX and image, with awesome OST by Goldsmith and Horner (I hate Star 2009's music).
Then we had TNG bringing new image and ... costumes. Again strong personalities with strong friendship, but with some flaws or impossible aspirations.
Then DS9 (my favourite), added some strong themes as war necessities, treason to your country, torture, slavery (yeah, Cardassians, I'm looking at you!). Not sure why but the characters really stand out for me. And they added an interesting concept : the Dominion war, spanning 4 seasons.
I can't speak much of Voyager (I hate all characters) or Enterprise (I vomit after seeing Scott Bakula after 10 seconds).

Star Wars has great things too (4-6)

<will continue later, have to sleep>

I think the reasons are mostly that the 6 movies are so much alike, there is truly no differences in them. We just can't see why the prequels are so hated when the originals were done the same way.

Anakin is annoying, Luke is annoying
stupid little comic relief Jar Jar, stupid little comic relief teddy bears
snobish little queen dress in white, snobish little princess dress in white
2 comic relief robots in prequels, 2 comic relief robots in originals
incredible cheesie one liner in all 6 movies
one domensional vilains in all 6 movies
not that incredible actors in all 6 movies
lots of space battles in all 6 movies
sound and fire in space in all 6 movies
no science in all 6 movies

I'm very happy that you enjoy the pre-quels and all. I really am. But don't force them on others.
Millions of us that were there since the very beginning really hate them and find them to be watered down.
I'll take it a step further...I personally think that the pre-quels should have never been produced. Also, George (ruined my childhood) Lucas should have never made changes to the original trilogy back in 1997.
And to answer your question...I think us vetrans still went to see the pre-quels hoping that George rediscovered his magic. It just didn't happen. Same reason why I went to see Indy:KOTCS. In the hopes that he wrote a solid story for it. Instead I went back home after the movie finished and I wanted to break something. I know that you loved the new Indy and thats all good, just keep in mind that for every new fan, there is another passionate fan that wants to burn all the film stock and pretend that it never happend.

I think I'm done now. LOL.
But that is the line I don't understand from everyone, how did he ruined your childhood? By making the prequels? I do understand that many people do not love the prequels, that is quite alright! It's normal, time have change, many people have grown up since the originals, like it or not we change. What I don't understand is the line "Lucas ruined my childhood". If your entire childhood happiness is only based on 3 movies, I truly feel sorry for all of you. How can your childhood be ruined by 3 movies you do not enjoy?

I grew up watching both Star Wars and Star Trek, but Trek had a bigger influence on me as evidenced by what I named my son: Kirk. I also have a min pin with pointed ears. Can you guess his name?
