The movie or the player? The player is an LG Blu Ray. By the many complaints I am assuming it is the movie. Now I am weary about other movies I am going to buy.
No, it's probably the player. It might need a firmware upgrade that LG is behind on. It wouldn't be the first time and probably wont be the last.

To rmishael re ice age problem: I have a brand new LG blu-ray player and have had the same problem with Ice Age 3. The first one I bought, all sound stopped when the movie itself began--up to that point all was well. I installed the update as suggested, and then the sound on the movie was abrasive and garbled. I returned the disc to Wal-Mart. The same thing happened on the 2nd disc, and on the 3rd (I think Wal-Mart is tired of seeing me come in to return that disc). I've now given up and just watch this movie on the DVD that came with the set. I'm new to the blu-ray world and have only two other movies in blu-ray so far. Both of those play perfectly. Before I bought the two additional blu-rays, I contacted LG, who said I'd need to send the new player in for repairs. However, since the other two movies work just fine, I'm wondering if it's just something with Ice Age 3, not my player? Maybe some setting needs to be adjusted for that disc only, something I simply don't know enough about.

The "something that needs to be adjusted for that disc only" is almost certainly the firmware. LG and Samsungs are a bit notorious for being behind in the firmware updates. I watched this all the way through without any audio drop-outs on my 40gb PS3.

Default It's a firmware issue

Facing this issue with my LG LHB-977 HTIB. Spoke to an LG rep today. He said they are aware of the audio issue with the Ice Age discs. They are working on a firmware update although they don't have a date when this would be available.
Scary when you think about it. Newer discs with newer audio/video features and the blu-ray players are behind with their updates. Price that we pay for newer technology I guess.

I tested my disc (that doesn't work properly on the Samsung) on a PS3 and it worked fine, so I didn't take the disc back, and will await a firmware update for my Samsung. I am planning on buying a new BD player, probably a Sony BDP-N460, for my home theatre and moving to Samsung to another TV (that isn't blu yet), and hopefully this will take care of the problem.

And that's just it- it's not the "price we pay for newer technology" - it only is if you have a Samsung or LG. Consistently across these forums I see people with these players reporting issues over and over. I rarely (as in, I can't think of any examples at all) see this occur with Panasonic, Pioneer, or Sony players (including the PS3 for the most part). I personally have NEVER had a disc not work- on top of my collection at one point I was bringing home 8 or more discs a month.

The movie played without a hitch, using Oppo BDP-83, and looked flawless. So far with this player (have had it for about 4 months) not one problem with ANY disc, blu-ray or dvd. I do empty my persistent storage every so often even though I don't have BD-Live turned on, to erase the tiny bit of Java crap that does get stored.

Yeah, the Oppo should've been on my little list too. I think it had one issue with one movie and they quickly rolled out a firmware date on it.

That's a player I'd love to own.

Default lg lhb953

Yes i just got this lg player and had exact problem. I updated the firmware which fixed many problems. BUT, the ice age bluray has audio but sounds all crackled throguhout. no matter where it is in the movie, it makes the speakers crackle. i put in any other dvd and they works just fine. also, the SOUND option doesnt give me the PLII movie option to goto like the tech support guy said. still trying to figure out that one....

Are you bitstreaming or decoding internally? The disc doesn't have a PLII option, only 7.1 and 5.1 audio tracks. Does the regular non-HD track have crackling as well?

No other movies play fine, but neither do they have this PLII MOVIE option, which tech support said it should have. Im not sure it should be there except that every other home theater i have seen has some kind of "movie" option in the sound setting. This will show only GAMES, NEWS, SPORTS, BASS BOOSTER, NATURAL, CONCERT, and BYPASS. You would think movie would be there somewhere, I dunno. When I play the ipod or the stereo, it does show up however. Other than that, I went to the audio option under the actual Ice Age movie, and it showed to be on the 7.1 setting. This system is only 5.1. The options dont have a 5.1 setting for english, but when i set it to 5.1 in french.... everything worked fine, except it was in french. 7.1 is the only english version for this movie (that i have found so far) In looking this up i found that sure enough, these are the only options:
Audio

English: DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1
French: Dolby Digital 5.1
Spanish: Dolby Digital 5.1
Portuguese: Dolby Digital 5.1

So what the hell?

ok so now i see on the back of the movie case that the "DVD" has 5.1 in english.
The bluray has 7.1 only.
Should the 7.1 not at least downgrade to 5.1 so it's not all staticy and crap?
or is this a receiver, or bluraydvd problem?

That is really odd.I have had NO Issues with the Audio in any spot or section with "Ice Age 3" .

Sorry to hear about the problem.
Almost makes you wish you had 2 other copies to try. Then see if ALL of them have the Crackling in the Audio.

If they dont then perhaps a small batch of discs had Audio Issues.

well i took the disc to another player, im not sure but i think it also is 5.1 and it played fine. my concern now is, are most blurays going to have the 7.1 english option only? and if so, should it not work on a 5.1 system?
also, when i change one of the sound options for the player to HD EFFECT - OFF, it will play without any distortion, except that option (called "bypass") will only use the front 2 speakers and the subwoofer. Im not understanding this. Im thinking of just trading in for a different player. this is ridiculous. thanks for ya'lls help though!

ok here's what i have learned after talking to LG tech support again. This movie only came out in 7.1 for english. He says therefore the player must be 7.1 also (unless you want to watch it in 5.1 french/spanish/etc..). Therefore, if movies start coming out in 7.1 only, in the future, as did this iceage 3 movie, and you have a 5.1 receiver....you are SCREWED. WTG technology.

It shouldn't be because it's 7.1. The extra rear channels will/should go back into the side channels. Plus the other 5.1 tracks on the disc aren't lossless.

What kind of receiver are you using and how do you have it connected? Are you bitstreaming the sound or decoding internally?

I have a ps3 and is the problem only on LG or is it a wide spread problem? I don't have the movie yet.

Well it turns out the player, an LG lhb953 home theater, was flawed. It was the first bluray ive owned and just didnt know any better. To make it worse, the tech guy at LG kept saying the player was fine and that it was a technology problem, as the dvd was 7.1 but the receiver was 5.1. Turns out that advice was CRAP. I took the dang thing back, got a samsung (they were out of sonys..) and it all works just fine. The LG sounded a little better (when it worked) and I would like to try a different one, but dont want to waste any more time on it. I just to need to figure out how to get more sound from the rear speakers, how to get my tv to play thru it, etc...

Clayton, I had it hooked in via hdmi cable. Im not sure what you mean by bitstreaming or decoding internally though. Help me out on that so I'll know a little more about this. Thanks for the help thus far tho!

Basically for bitstreaming, you're letting your receiver decode the sound. If you set it to PCM, it decodes the audio tracks internally and sends them to the receiver as PCM.

Just be careful with the Samsung. They're notorious for not keeping their players up to date with Firmware upgrades (same with LG actually).
