I don't have either release, but I don't doubt that the Criterion looks way better. But I also don't doubt that had Arrow released it in the UK and had access to the same master Criterion has, that the Arrow would look better than the Criterion. And speaking of Don't Look Now, funny how both the Optimum and Criterion releases have the director approved sticker on them despite looking so different:

The UK Optimum release even states that the restoration was both supervised and approved. Just shows how worthless these "director's approved" labels are. People only use these director seals of approval in order to hype up the release they personally prefer anyway.

Even David Lynch missed something in Eraserhead the first time and there had to be a replacement so don't be so sure about Mulholland Drive.

People should be more wary of The Brood as Cronenberg may have wanted to change the colors on it like Scanners or he could miss something too because he signed off on the Arrow Blu-ray of Shivers in the UK that was censored.
Arrow's RABID also underwent a radical color timing alteration too, advance concerns about THE BROOD are well founded.

A missed opportunity, but oh well. I own the MGM disc and am happy with owning that one if this one is distorted. If it wasn't I would've bought it, but not double dipping for this. At least it's not another De Palma film that hasn't gotten a blu-ray release yet getting a messed up image like this (like Femme Fatale or Raising Cain). If Criterion fixes it, I'll buy it, if not I'll pass. At least this info about the transfer made it out before release day.

Director approved means nothing when the image obviously looks like distorted crap.

Madame De... is a world cinema classic that has been admired and studied for over 60 years. You can be quite certain that its place in the cinematic pantheon far eclipses Dressed to Kill's.

But feel free to show your ignorance.

I'm not ignorant at all. Just because something is a "cinema classic" doesn't mean very many people care about it other than a very small niche. Obviously no one on here cares much because the Criterion disc doesn't even have it's own forum thread. In this day and age cult films have a lot more passionate fans/people who will actually buy the disc than those of so-called cinema classics. Interest level doesn't necessarily translate to quality.

There are "more important" films and then the films that get watched a lot more. I own a lot of both.

Although the BLU I have watched the most is oddly enough a WB Archive title for Death Trap. It never gets old.

Speaking of compression is the Crtierion so heavily compressed to fit the extras on it?
I'm assuming by 'feature' this means the movie correct? According to Tooze:

Feature size
MGM: 33,342,259,200 bytes / Bitrate approx 40mbps
Arrow: 33,786,230,784 bytes / Bitrate approx 40mbps
Criterion: 22,805,194,752 bytes / Biterate approx 30mbps

Not sure about the Arrow, but the MGM extras are in standard def (just ported from the 2001 MGM DVD), and the Criterion ones are in HD, so they probably need more disc space to fit all the extras on since most are in HD.

The Optimum release is dreadful. Aggressive digital filtering. Check the comparison on caps-a-holic

Oh man, I freaking LOVE that movie. Yet another forgotten Lumet gem.
And Caine is hysterical, that guy can do anything.

Now, back to Dressed To Kill

A negative review on a Criterion disc? Say it ain't so! Hopefully they fix this issue and bring out second pressings.

Just read the review here. I'm shocked.
Has a standard Blu ray ever gotten higher marks than the Criterion before ?
I even went back and checked the review on my MGM BD, to be sure.
Guess my money stays in the bank this time.

I don't get the squishing issue. Does the image stretch and squash as the film plays, or is just the image sized differently compared with previous releases of the film?

All I know is that it is unlikely Criterion will ever fix this and I'll be forced to either import the Arrow release or pay inflated prices for the MGM disc. This news has ruined my day.
