![]() Hahaha, John Carpenter playing host to a horror anthology is a hoot in itself. The actual stories are a little light in tone, but I can dig them (probably enjoyed "Hair" the most). This was a good cheap title on Vudu, but the sound quality is crap. Blu-Ray seemed like a must for this--an underrated gem imo, and it fits well with all the other anthology films I own. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ---------------------------------------- Maximum Overdrive ![]() Hahaha, I used to love this as a kid. And I knew other kids that loved this too. It just seemed like one of those must-see cult gems back then. Revisiting it now, I can see how dumb the plot actually is. It's not boring though--the characters are a hoot to watch and the film overall bears the promise of something like Christine on a mass scale of slaughter. Part of me is scratching my head over why King favored so much camp in this, and how he could pen something with so many plot holes (maybe cocaine was a hell of a drug). But the other half of me (the kid half maybe) just wants me to shut the f**k up and enjoy the thing. It's a moron movie after all. ![]() ![]() ![]() ---------------------------------------- Trilogy of Terror ![]() Short, simple, straightforward stories. The first two don't really move me much, but holy crap, the third story is an absolute must. ![]() ![]() ![]() ---------------------------------------- Ash Vs Evil Dead Seasons 1 - 3 ![]() Can't believe I put this series off this long. This show has all it all: a very pleasing blend of camp, action, gore, and scares, all with a fresh modern production. I loved Ashy Slashy in the movies already--now he's cemented as one of my all-time favorite heroes. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 44 Films, 1 anime OVA, and 3 TV seasons [Show spoiler] 2016 Body Count | 2015 Body Count | 2014 Body Count 2013 Body Count | 2012 Body Count | 2011 Body Count 2010 Body Count Last edited by Al_The_Strange; 10-25-2018 at 12:46 AM. |

[Show spoiler] 10/24/18: Love means never having to say you’re ugly. -The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971): ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() -Dr. Phibes Rises Again * (1972): ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Entertainingly gimmicky fare from the early-70’s AIP horror cycle features Vincent Price as Anton Phibes, a doctor from the mid-1920s who loses his beloved wife on the operating table…at the same time he loses his face during a car crash in his mad dash to the hospital. Left horribly disfigured (applying latex facial appliances to restore a vague intimation of his former appearance and a voice enhancer in order to speak), he swears vengeance upon the nine doctors and nurses who assisted in the failed surgery, meting out upon them a series of elaborately gruesome fates inspired by the Biblical plagues of Egypt (plague of locusts, Slaying of the Firstborn, etc.). The first Phibes is one of Price’s better films from this period, filled with memorably ghoulish touches and great sense of morbid humor. The 1971 quickie sequel finds the doctor emerging from suspended animation after a three-year rest, and looking to resurrect his wife by finding a “river of life” in Egypt, while striking out at those who stand in his way with more imaginatively sick methods that look forward a few decades to the Saw movies (one victim – his arms pinned in the jaws of a statue – has to break open a dog statue to find a key that will free him…only to find it’s full of scorpions). It’s still fun, although stretched a bit thin, and it’s probably for the good that this was the last time Phibes rose on the silver screen. |

![]() [Show spoiler] 24/10 - Army of Darkness* (1993) ![]() ![]() ![]() Watching the USA Theatrical Cut. What the hell with Linda getting a different actress each fricking movie? I know they didn't had the rights to use footage of the original Evil Dead for Evil Dead II, but did that happened too with Army of Darkness not being able to use Evil Dead II footage? I mean, they were done by the same companies, weren't they? Reinassence Pictures. So? But I believe they used some bits like Ash being send to the past. Also, I like the different Ash we got: kinda dorky one, ladiesman badass one, and badass S-mart ladiesman one. Now, Saturday I start watching Ash vs Evil Dead (tomorrow I will watch the new Halloween, + Alien since that's part of this list, and then on Friday is Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and Bride of Chucky. So, busy days). * Indicates first time viewing. |

10/24/18 ![]() Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers: ![]() ![]() ![]() Hadn't watched this one in awhile, but going back, it's a decent sequel. Having Michael and Loomis return (however plausible it is) is nice. The movie also does have some really good moments. From Jamie's dream sequence at the beginning, to Michael stalking the characters in the house to the showdown on the pick-up truck going down the highway. I will say I didn't like the mask in this one at all and the characters aren't nearly as memorable as the ones from the original, save for Danielle Harris as Jamie. Oh, the horror so far this year: [Show spoiler]

It was beautiful. I have seen this in every media incarnation, but this viewing was a stunner. It had clearly visible and finely resolved grain, it showed even more fine detail as there were a couple things I didn’t recall noticing before (veins in Lydia’s hands and her crooked front tooth, a rocking horse across from the Maitland’s Hardware store, a talking pink skeleton outside Juno’s office) even after seeing it 40+ times. I’m positive that the soundtrack was restored too. Audio drops and softness that I have come to know like the back of my hand were clear as a bell. 10/19 The Birds (1963)
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() the birds.jpg An idea that could've been b monster-movie material it's turned into a masterpiece in Hitchcock's hands. His sharp observations of human relations and the witty dialogue is a pleasure to watch. The use of the camera is terrific ahd the actor's direction is marvelous. The lack on explanation for the events is a brilliant touch. 10/20 The Cave (2016) ![]() the cave.jpg Horrendous Norwegian film, it's imagination has flown ![]() fell asleep. Of course the pay-off isn´t worth it, and it's ultimately stupid. 10/21 The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() texas chainsaw.jpg A brilliant example of excellency in low-budget filmmaking. This classic is the one that established all the traditional elements for the slasher subgenre, but more daring and primal that all the films that followed. Primal, brutal and incredibly disturbing. 10/23 Sleepy Hollow (1999) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() sleepy hollow.jpg This film is classic Burton: visually stunning, homages to classic horror films, quirky sense of humor, strange romance. It's a very enjoyable adapatation of the Washington Irving story, with some nice cameos and a great turn of Christopher Walken as the villain. Deeply atmospheric, courtesy of an excellent cinematography of Emanuel Lubezki and fun production design, it's recommended Halloween stuff. |

![]() ![]() #25 ![]() ![]() ![]() Yep, they don't make them like this anymore. Based on the famous vampire story "Carmilla", this Spanish film is laced with gore and nudity and completely unedited in this blu ray from Mondo Macabre. With a 4k restoration the disc looks fantastic and the movie, while crude on many levels, is still visually a treat with mood and style. |
