I recently did a research on some of the best games available for PS3 and went to buy them and it turns out, I suck in all of them.
I am 34 yrs old and the games of my generation were the SNES games, the PS1 and the 1st gerneration PS2 games. I was great in all of them but I was younger then. Why are they so hard. I want to play them because I want see how the stories unfold but I cant get too far to see what happens next. The best graphics are mostly in later parts of the game and I cant even get that far. I have a 52" HDTV just for these games. These are the games I have: Uncharted 1 ( hard) Resistance 2 (hard) Infamous (not so hard) Resident Evil 5 (hard) God of War collection (not so hard) COD Modern Warfare 1 (hard) Prototype (didnt play yet) Little Big planet (not so hard) SF4 (easy still remember the old moves) Blaz Blue (easy) It seems the hardest games are the shooters. Its so freaking hard to aim the gun. I need some pointers on how to aim correctly. By the time I get the target on the enemy he already shot me like 20 times!! I want to get Assassins Creed 2 because it seems like a great story but whats the point if I can't get to the ending? Last edited by MotionBlurr; 12-16-2009 at 04:13 PM. |

I feel your pain.
It took me a few months to get used to the game controllers for shooters. I found just practice and trying them out got easier. I am surprised you find Uncharted difficult though because I found 3rd person view a lot easier. A friend of mine can't play MW2 or the like because of the controller but he did get into Uncharted 2 and the original Assassin's Creed. Practice makes perfect. |

Tell us a little more about what you find difficult about the shooters. Do you find it difficult to hit the moving targets? Do you think the aiming reticle moves too slow or is it too fast and you overshoot your target? Are you having trouble finding cover to avoid getting hit? Are you having trouble moving and shooting?
I used to hate shooters because I sucked when I first played. Uncharted was actually my first entry into shooters. It was hard at first but with enough practice you will learn which enemies to take out first. There are patterns. You will get better. On a related note, I found I really sucked at the old games now like Castlevanie IV and Mega Man and the old Ninja Gaiden (NES). |

It is like I wrote this original post myself! I want to be a gamer soooo bad, but I just suck at it. Give me Tecmo Bowl or Punch-Out and I will beat you down, but the new games just dominate me.
That is why I went with the Wii. I can play for 20 minutes, have a good time, and move on. |

It took a while for me to transition from PC shooters to console shooters because of the control change, but now I'm comfortable with it.
Also for shooters, you need to be congnizant of some basic tactics: use cover, advance deliberately, and be prepared for enemies to try to flank you. Running around with guns blazing is a recipe for disaster in contemporary shooters. You might want to take notice if you are adhering to certain bad 'habits' when you play certain games. Sometimes as 'older' gamers we may have developed an approach or style of play which doesn't necessarily work well as games evolve. When you get frustrated, just try to keep in mind that games are basically puzzles--they provide the player with certain tools to move forward through its challenges. Try to take stock in all the weapons, abilities, etc. the game provides and apply them to the task at hand. Beyond that, just about every game has a strategy guide and clips on Youtube to give you pointers if need be. |

Relax, just pick a game you love to play, select the difficulty you CAN play and keep at it. I'll be 41 years old next month, and I've had my PS3 for 13 months. I never played anything but PC RPGs before that (other then the Atari 2600 I had as a kid). My first game to play was GTAIV. I thought it sucked, so quit right away and put in Uncharted 1 (the only other game I had). I found it EXTREMELY difficult on the normal or medium difficulty, and could not finish my first playthrough without switching to easy for a few sequences. Then, almost a year later, after having also played Fallout 3, Dead Space and Bioshock (all on the medium or normal settings) I replayed Uncharted 1 (on normal or medium) just before UC2 came out. It was a breeze. Parts where I had to switch to easy I played through without dying. I subsequently earned a platinum trophy in UC2, and I am three trophies away from a Platinum in Dead Space.
Here's what I recommend. Start all over with your game collection. Choose one you like a lot and play only that game, so you get used to only that control interface. UC1 is a good choice, because it has shooter elements and platforming elements (which are fairly challenging I must admit; it's less forgiving than UC2). Play it all the way through on any difficulty, and by the end you'll be a master of the controller. Then, choose another game to play and get into it until you're comfortable with the controls. Then periodically go back and play a little of the previous game (preferably on a harder difficulty) to get your brain used to using different sets of controls. Whatever you decide to do, I think it will take you several months to a year, with casual gameplay (I can't play every day, and when I can, it's sometimes only 15 minutes) to develop the skills to play some really great games on the difficult settings. If you play hours per day, it should come really quickly. You'll eventually find many games too easy on the normal difficulty setting. Just be patient with your skills and realize you're never going to be as good as the 16-25 year olds who have already been gaming for 10 years. My biggest point of frustration now is that I don't have time to play all of the good games I want to play to the extent I want to play them. Keep at it and best of luck.! PS. Sponge-worthy is also exactly right. You have to make sure you are taking advantage of all of the tools the game designers gave you. |

I was a hardcore PC shooter player, was very competitive. Then I switched to console's about two years ago. Took me around six months to get used to that analog stick. Drove me crazy on how sensitive it was. What I would do at times is, put in a game like uncharted. Load up the game and just get to a point where you can just shoot at stuff. Not AI enemies just pick something (statue's eye, tree branch etc.) Stand there and try to shoot that spot as quickly as possible and as accurate as possible. Try that for a bit to get used to the stick and controls. In six months LOL ( inno time you will be competitive) |

Play on very easy at first and then gradually move up. With enough practice, you'll eventually get the gist of it. Most shooters usually follow the same strategy, which is why most people can jump from Modern Warfare to Killzone 2 with no problems.
My friend has the same problem as you. He says that games nowadays are too difficult/complicated and he misses the playstation 1 days. He owns a PS3, but doesn't own one game for it lol. |

Yeah, I was the same way for about the first year or so that I had the PS3. It was my first console since the SNES days. I'm, uh, a little older than 34.
![]() I thought Uncharted 1 was pretty hard but after asking for help and playing a few of the sections over and over and over, I finally got through it. I don't know what difficulty I played it on but it was probably regular. With Uncharted 2, I played it the first time through on Very Easy so I could concentrate more on the story. It was pretty easy that way. I played through it again on Easy and while most of the sections weren't too bad, a couple were harder than I expected so it took me a while to get past them. I'm now playing it on the normal difficulty as I just play around with it but I'm not sure if I'll try to complete it again or not. Bioshock is really, really easy on its easiest setting and it's a good game. The single player campaign on Modern Warfare 2 wasn't too bad on normal difficulty and it has easier settings. Also, a lot of the shooters have aim assist so try turning on that option if available. That should help some. Coming from PC gaming to a console, shooters are what gave me the most trouble on a console. I couldn't aim at all initially but slowly I've been getting better...at least good enough to complete most of them while at first I usually couldn't get past the first couple of levels. Anyway, I still dread the boss battles in some of the games but at least now I have a shot at getting past them. So, just keep playing the games and maybe play some of the easiers ones (like Bioshock) and eventually you'll improve enough to be able to complete them. Good luck. |

Exactly. There's still the occasional title that comes along where I think it would be nice to have a nuclear-powered gaming rig. But overall it just fails a cost-benefit analysis for me. Plus, the perpetual upgrading is somewhat a racket: GPU manufacturers get game devs to include the latest shader/mapper/etc. tech into a new game's engine. Gamers must then upgrade to play the new games. Rinse. Repeat.

It might take some time, but you'll get there. It took me a lil while to get used to it again. I didn't play a console shooting game from like 2001 to 2008, but now I kick ass again. Just practice and enjoy the games, hopefully your reflexes will start to quicken and you'll get better at the point and shoot stuff
