Yamaha RX-V765 Crossover Frequency and Price question

Hey, guys. I am considering purchasing the Yamaha RX-V765 in the near future and decided to look through the manual just to get an idea of the functions of the receiver.

I was looking through the part where it was describing how to manually set the speakers to LARGE or SMALL. The manual states that if you set it to SMALL the low frequency components of the channels are output from a subwoofer. My question is: What is the low frequency cutoff? Can you manually set the cutoff frequency in the receiver? The manual seems really vague... unless I am just missing the information right in front of me.

I'm used to using my Onkyo which lets me choose the frequency cutoff for each individual speaker instead of just choosing a LARGE or SMALL speaker configuration.

Also, what is considered a good deal on this receiver? Currently Newegg.com is selling it for $600.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

On the Yamaha you can choose a cutoff, but it is for all of the speakers. Not individual speakers, within the small configuration. The large will set your speakers to full range, which is not optimal for a HT setting.

As far as deals, I am not sure. I think if you can get last years 663 for $350 right now, and can deal with the two HDMI inputs...do it.

I am assuming you are upgrading from the Onkyo for the preouts? If this is the case I would consider it a good upgrade.

JasonR, you are exactly right. I am upgrading for the pre-outs and the 12v trigger. I was looking at grabbing the Onkyo 807 but it really is a bit higher than I want to spend. Also, the funny thing with the 807 is that the 12v trigger is only for Zone 2 and Zone 3. It would be useless for me since I'd like to hook up the receiver to...... say an Emotiva UPA-7. I don't use Zone 2 or Zone 3.

As for the HDMI inputs, I'd love to have the four just to have them. I suppose I can deal with two. I searched around this forum and saw some were able to purchase the Yamaha 765 for just under $500. I suppose I can wait around and see what happens.

And to respond to your post, my speakers are "okay" and I currently have them all set at 80Hz and it sounds sweet so only being able to set the crossover for all of them at once is fine.

If the 765 has the outputs you are looking for, an amp is in your future, and the price is right. Do it! A great upgrade as far as I am concerned!

The Yamaha makes for a nice processor, and I think you will be very happy!

If you are looking at the UPA-7, I would be more inclined to recommend the XPA-3 or -5. Then just run your surrounds off of your receiver, it is plenty capable of that.

YO! Since you're online I hope you can see this one last question:

Can I adjust the volume of individual speakers? Say I want to pump the center channel up 5db higher than my fronts, can I do that?

Just curious, which do you have? I looked in your gallery but I can't tell. They all look the same!

Also, thanks for the tips on the external amps. I'll look into that as well! I'm kind of a newbie when it comes to HT. Only been reading and playing with all these new toys for two years and I'm still learning so much just from reading these forums.... Which I have grown to love and hate because it gives me "upgrade-itus"!!!

Besides the XPA-3 and -5 having higher power output than the UPA-7, why do you recommend them over getting the UPA-7? And I also notice the XPA-5 is the same price as the UPA-7.

As you can see, I do not own an external amp and have no idea how to judge them. I only recently learned of the 12v trigger used to turn them on. I thought my Harmony would be able to control an Emotiva but apparently that's not the case.

And thanks to you guys, I am definitely set on this Yamaha as my "upgrade" receiver. Definitely not a lateral move for me from my Onkyo TX-SR674. Don't get me wrong, my Onkyo is awesome. Only reason I'm upgrading is because I'm gonna let my bro use it for his PS3 (old school version). So I figure I can grab this RX-V765 and upgrade to better speakers later on if need be. I'm pretty excited. Just gotta wait for a nice price reduction and I'm all over that biyoch.

Holy crap, it dropped to $450 on newegg.com tonight. Now I have to jump on this. Will wait until Sunday for strange reasons. Hopefully it will drop a few more bucks. I don't want it to go back up!

The low frequency cutoff for the receiver at what frequency the speakers would send the signal TO the subwoofer. just to avoid confusion.

when you say individually increase the volume, you can definitely do so to a certain extent, up to around 10db or decrease it as well.
