Default I got another ignorant person

I work at a Hollywood Video and you would not believe how many of my customers with widescreen TVs demand fullscreen copies of movies. They would rather have deformed stretched out pictures than black bars. According to the most recent customer, he likes to get the "full picture," cutting off the sides of a movie and stretching it to fit your screen gets you the "full picture."

That's almost as frustrating as my friend who cranks up the bass all the way so that it ruins the actual sound just because he likes to feel the bass. Is the bass supposed to enhance the sound or ruin it?

Why is it so hard for these people to understand these simple concepts.

When I was a little kid a friend of mine's family had a color TV (big deal back then!), and he always twisted the color knob until everything looked green. Because green was his favorite color.

I don't know what this has to do with the OP, except maybe that there are lots of goofy people running around. And some of 'em have big TVs.

Well, I do the same thing, and my surround sound system is made of nothing but subwoofers. I enjoy the distorted picture, and extra loud rumble.

I know what you mean. I had someone say the same thing, thinking Widescreen was just so it could look cool and that they were cutting off the top and bottom to make it look cool. ARG! I had to explain to them the truth.
I have also tried to tell people that the speakers in their car with the really loud bass is bad, and that rattling sound you hear whenever the music plays means you broke your speaker.. i couldn't get through to them though.. i think the bass made them deaf. Just like the overly bright and saturated images blind people into getting bad tvs or setting them poorly.

Sometimes we just have to accept that ultimately this is all for entertainment and if some people enjoy their bass to the extreme, then so be it; if others enjoy everyone looking like green space men, so be it; and if others enjoy people looking extra fat and distorted, then that's fine too.

There's a fine line between acceptance and understand director's intent and how things should be and the whole reason for all this stuff is to reproduce how they should be.

But who's to say that super bass fat distorted green space men aren't just as entertaining for someone else as accurate colors, sound and picture are for me?

whoawhoawhoa, I think you're getting a little too technical for this type of person. ''what do you mean zoom? like binoculars? I don't want to use binoculars in to watch a movie''

I'm sure they are just as entertained as I am. What I am trying to comprehend is why. What is it that these people have against the black lines? Why would they rather have distorted stretched pictures?

HD DVD buyers make more sense to me than these people. Why somone would spend several thousand dollars on an HDTV and then demand stretched distored movies is beyond me. If that is how they watch their movies then several thousand dollars later they have a worse picture than they did on their old tube TV.

Tuner Classic Movies TCM has about a 10 minute clip on why widescreen movies are better. I wish everyone had access to that, it really puts it into perspective. They show how Lawarence of Arabia or Seven Brides for Seven Brothers look in Full Screen and then directly compare it to the Widescreen version. It really drives the point home Why widescreen is so much superior.

I've been addicted to Widescreen since my laser Disc days in the late 80's. I simply refuse to buy any movie not in Widescreen, unless of course it was filmed that way....

If I could show something like that to my customers here (at least the stupid ones who cant grasp this concept), then I might be able to change their minds.

Yes, it would. They run it every now and again, but if you could get a copy it would be perfect. They have Martin Sorcese explaining the details and doing most of the narration. I think every video store should have a copy ready to show.
