What do you consider affordable? $400, $600, $1000 or $1500... etc.

Sony 820 299-399
onkyo 606 about 400-499
Sony 920 399-599
Onkyo 805 700-1000
Denon 3808 $1600
pioneer 1018 $599
pioneer elite 92 $1299

But "good affordable" is relative to what you want to do and spend. A Safe pick on the low end is the Onkyo 606 or the Sony 920, they both process DTS-HD, DD True HD and LPCM(multi-channel PCM), both are full band width receivers, both have 4 HDMI inputs. My wife will tell me my "good affordable" would be below $700 which puts me into the Sony 920 Or Onkyo's listed above.

High end you have prolly a lot more options Denon 3808, Pioneer Elite, Sony ES line, Marantz. If your looking into HIGH end products, try to catch RUR, Driver King, Perch, or Crackin, they seem to be pretty knowledgable about AV and are on the site regularly.

I'm guessing that by affordable you mean $300-$400. I would get either the Onkyo 606 or the Yamaha 663 for that price. Don't touch a Sony in that price range, only their ES line is decent. The rest have bad distortion and do not bench test well with all channels driven.

I have always been leary about Sony receivers. It just seems like Yamaha and Onkyo seem to do more, and better, at a better price.

tvcity.tv

Yamaha RX-v1800 for a little over 8 hundred.

4 HDMI 1.3a's

Switches any source and upconverts all signals via HDMI.

Comes with TWO remotes.

IPOD capable.

Optional bottle opener for you beer!!!! (um...not really)

Also...decodes EVERY Codec on the planet.

The problem is he wants 3 to 5 hdmi inputs (sorry Yamaha - and I like Yamaha alot...check the sig). Now Yamaha can get back into the mix if he doesn't mind purchasing an inexpensive hdmi switcher. The only reason Sony (non ES) is in the mix...the amount of HDMI inputs they provide and cost - that's it.

Good recommendation (this is the price point where Yamaha adds more HDMI inputs).

AH HA!!!

Aaaaaaand...she does all the switching!!! Woo Hoo!!!

Honestly, I don't know how tvcity does it for a little over 800

Maybe it is a drug front or something. I can tell you from experience, that I didn't get one hokey phone call trying to sell me extra anything or have any problems with shipping.

I MUST say though...if I remember correctly...they did ship it...in it's box. It was not double boxed if I remember. BUT...the rx-v1800 is such a freaking BEAST...it would be hard to damage.

(just feel the need to be completely honest because there may be a risk involved with using them...even for that great price.)
