you still have to figure how much power your devices (amp/receiver, display, DVD player, anything plugged into it, etc) use... if it totals more than 640 watts (remember this is power consumption, not power out for your amps)... then no...

sorry, if this is all noobie stuff. But you're really helping me a lot. What's the difference between power consumption and power out?

like something like a dishnetwork receiver... how much power consumption should something like that have? I'm not sure where my manual for that is...

the tv itself consumes at max 705w.... so I guess that is out of the picture... Shit. Well, all I need is something to protect my stuff if a fuse blows. I can't spend 1200 on a UPS. I just can't afford that. Will the Belkin thing still protect my system?

Not the one you have a link to... these have more power

http://www.apcguard.com/Back-UPS_RS.asp

That 'little' 50" plasma uses 705wt damn , my 50" RP uses 210wt max

I know it's ridiculous, but the picture is phenomenal.

Thanks for the link. Do you think this UPS would do the trick?

APC BACK-UPS HT 1500VA 24V BATTERY PACK, Black #BR24BPBLK
Our Price: $176.95

I have a TV 705W
Receiver 630W
Two Satellite Receivers ?W (not very much)
PS3 200W
Total: at least 1550W.... that's a shit load....
Is this UPS sufficient?

i think the ps3 consumes over 200 watts... so you will still be out of luck.

Like the above poster said, you want an uninterruptable power supply (UPS) which kicks in when the power goes out. It runs off a battery for a few minutes until you can power everything off. Your problem is going to be that a home theater system will suck the life out of the battery like a parched vampire. UPS's are designed to supply some power for computers and other small amperage stuff, but UPS's with bigger batteries costs a fortune.

Calculate the wattage required by all the gear and go from there. If you get a unit that cannot supply the amount of wattage your gear sucks up, it's not gonna do you any good, it will probably just reset itself as well. Look for brands like APC. And no, Belkin and Monster do NOT make this kind of stuff.
Read this above and just had to respond...

Monster absolutely makes this stuff!

so I guess, the solution is maybe to buy 2 separate APC UPS'. One for the TV and satellite receivers and one for the Receiver and ps3....

That will cost around at least $400.... does that sound about right?

Monster makes that stuff but their UPS sucks horribly. I would look at the APC s15 or s20 that are designed to not only click on when the power goes out but they are also voltage stabilizers so that if the power drops for a bit they'll click on to keep the power constant. That is the thing that will protect you.

Default Do I need one?

I get my TV tomorrow, but I'm not getting a sound system or receiver quite yet.

Do I even NEED a power conditioner? BB kids say so and had a snazy demo, but I'm no convinced. However, I trust my BR.C folk very much.

I'm getting a 52" Bravia XBR4. Why do I even need a power conditioner. Is there some specific reason I need one if I already have power strips with surge protectors? Is there damage to be done to my new baby LCD if I DON'T have a clean power source?

Don't plan on doing a receiver or speaker for a while yet, so for right now I'm just looking to go basic...

Thoughts folks?

Thanks, Doc

well, I have all of my units plugged into a surge protector, but when my fuse blew a few times, I think it led to my receiver's motherboard (something like that) frying. So now I can't enjoy my blu's the way they're intended....
So I'd recommend a UPS for that reason. The power conditioner is more for a non-fluctuating current to get a crisper picture and sound. Two separate things... at least that's what I've gathered. Sorry about the run-on sentence.

$1500 is a little out of my price range....

would a $100 monster surge protector protect my units from blowing a board like I did? I am thinking... I think I have my things plugged into a cheapy one... maybe that didn't stop anything... any ideas?

You don't need a power conditioner, but I'd highly recommend one. The last thing you want is some power spike to take out your nice new TV...

Sounds to me like your whole circuit is iffy. If you're constantly popping breakers, you've got too much load on that circuit, and no amount of power conditioning or UPSes will change that. Fix the problem, not the symptom!

No......you should be fine with just a strip with a surge protector.Just make sure it will handle the T.V. ok.

Doctorsteve, the biggest benefit I've seen on my tv is the video filtering with the power conditioner. The picture is crisper when the conditioner is used. I know that BB pushes Monster Power Centers for $300-400. My brother also has the HTS-3500 that he paid around $350 for 2-3 yrs ago and it really cleaned up the picture on his Toshiba DLP. http://www.amazon.com/Monster-MP-HTS...&sr=8-1 However, I would shop around online before buying one from them if you decide to go that way unless they offer you an absolutely great deal.

I talked to the supervisor at the local Best Buy about power conditioners. Two weekends ago a car hit the power lines and crossed two high voltage lines. There were 40 power conditioners bought the next day. None of them were higher than $30. The people who had the more expensive power conditioners were fine. No equipment that was plugged into these conditioners was lost.
