True. The blu-ray version of A New Hope is superior to the DVD version.

The added “No” in RoJ is the reason why I never bought the complete saga on Blu.

Yeah, I bet that really hurt the sales figures.

Interestingly, before the addition, RoTJ was the only film in the saga to not have a character scream "No!".

Probably veering a bit too close to Pirateville, given the sources that are being discussed. But mentioning the actual end product itself doesn't seem to be verboten.

There were some minor changes to Jaws as well. A wire balancing the buoy during Chrissie’s death was removed as well as a sailboat on the horizon in the scene where Hooper and Quint try curling the rope attached to the barrel.

If you have a well cleaned and maintained VCR, a set of the Faces release in excellent to good condition, and a TV with great composite input picture, depending on where you sit to watch your movies, you can just about get DVD quality. I'd much rather watch my tapes than those terrible LD versions on the bonus discs when I'm in the mood for the originals.

From what I've read, the 'original version audio' on these are all fake-O approximations derived from a conglomeration of different sources. The video is from a genuine print, but the audio is not. Still a pretty good approximation.

That's only true for the 5.1 70mm mix. The 35mm mixes are straight from the optical tracks.

Are the really now? I don't have 4K77 right now but I have SSE and Despecialized and I'm pretty sure the 35mm Stereo on those came from Laserdisc, while the Mono came from a foreign VHS dub of a TV broadcast. Maybe there are new sources and I just never heard about it.

Does 4K77 have any commentaries or subs? All I've got is the Despecialised editions and from memory they have a few of both?

It's all in the eye of the beholder. I vastly prefer 4K77 (or in my case, the "Silver Screen Edition") because it's all "real", each frame intact from original sources... whereas the Despecialized uses the 2011 Blu-ray as its base, rotoscoping the rest together from many sources to make it LOOK like the original. A valiant and impressive effort, but I can see the stitches too often, and it becomes just as distracting (to me) as the Special Editions. I'm a freaky grain-lover, though, so I'm over the moon (that's no moon...) whenever I watch the Silver Screen Edition. It's like spooling up an original print.

Well, if it isn't a contractual/legal thing, it's not impossible. Maybe he'll say it's okay in they release the 4K version as "bonus material."
HIdalgo said "There's one very noteworthy person who doesn't want them released. Shouldn't be too hard to figure out who that is." The only time the OUT has ever been officially released (that non-anamorphic crap), it was released as "bonus material."

The thought that Lucas may have done that does keep my up at night.

Man, when I was a kid, I was totally into the "director=the word of God' philosophy. The Special Editions really changed that.

There have been plenty of director's cuts and stuff, but I can't name you a case of any other filmmaker who's gone to Orwellian extremes to bury the originals the way he has.

This is sort of what I'm hoping, but as pointed out, there's the lingering question of what's in that contract.

No, though some other fan editors have. He's trying to fix the even more badly mangled Special Edition of Lucas' THX 1138.

I think the question is whether or not the money Disney would have to spend on a remaster would be balanced by the amount of money they'd MAKE from releasing it, to put it bluntly.

Basically there's nothing wrong with the original materials that modern technology couldn't remedy, the question is simply one of LFL/Disney ever having the will to do it.
It sounds like after Lucas' tampering, it'd be a hell of a lot of work.

Lowry have done some great things since then but SW was not their finest hour.

I love the grain on it too, it's interesting that the 4K77 site advises people that the grain can be quite intense and is best viewed on a projector because of how they gently roll off such HF information, but viewed in 4K on a 4K TV (with sharpness set where it should be ) the grain is delicately fine for the most part. The numerous opticals make it look chunkier and noisier, no doubt, but even they don't go overboard with it and that we're looking at a print - a copy of a copy of a copy - means that grain is actually softened somewhat. The very capacious HEVC encode also helps to make sure that the grain is rendered as transparently as possible to the source.

The colour veers towards a greeny cast with other shots looking a bit bluey but that's photochemical timing for you, and that it's from a print (which has very high gamma) means that the black levels lack depth and shadow detail, along with the highlights looking very bright and blown out. Those are observations though, not complaints, as this thing is still a bloody miracle.

Every time I've watched Star Wars in recent years it's sent me to sleep, I guess through over-familiarity but also because of the way that the SE slows the movie down owing to all the little scene extensions, extra scenes and so on. But this original cut really moves, I mean it's not some hyper-kinetic Michael Bay film all of a sudden but it knows not to dwell for too long and, as the SE trailer told us, this really WAS like seeing it again...for the first time.

Bravo to George Lucas for being the mastermind behind this peerless achievement in popular cinema. And **** you George Lucas for being such a colossal tool by suppressing the restoration of the original version for so long, and it ain't over yet. Still, if it were to never happen then I'd be good with 4K77 for the rest of my days.
I have got to look at this one of these days....
