Respecting his wishes for his legacy content isn't the same thing as throwing out his story pitch and starting over for the new films. Lucas visited the sets of several of these films, went to the premieres etc so it's not like he's excommunicado, the Mouse hasn't put him on the shit list just because they didn't use his ideas.

It would be stupid enough thinking on Disney’s part to withhold the unaltered versions out of respect for George when they’re just going to release them after he’s gone anyway (and George knows it). It’s even stupider for George to not want them out there when he keeps revising his own preferred versions.

The logical approach would be to bring George in to sign off on his preferred version of I-VI once and for all, to never be further altered by Disney, and at the same time restore the original versions. I’d also prefer they at least include the ‘97 versions as well for a nice historical archive of what started this controversy in the first place, but maybe that’s just me.

We don't know that the first part hasn't already happened, i.e. George signing off on one last version, given that they were restored in 4K back in 2012. Other people have said that Disney have archived EVERYTHING in the LFL vaults for just such an occasion as restoring the OT to its original state. But, for *whatever* reasons, it ain't happening. Withholding them "becuz Lucas" seems as likely a reason as any, given that Pablo Hidalgo pointed the finger directly at Lucas when asked.

I know they’re not the same but something in my gut tells me it’s not or at the very least not fully the ‘respect George’ scenario. I’m not discrediting it but something tells me it’s not that.

I really doubt that the unaltered OT will come out any time soon or ever. This is disney and when have they really done alternate cuts or versions of films especially in the last 10-20 years? They've been keen on doing very little with releases especially compared to the DvD days. I'm sure they'll do very well with the streaming since they'll have so much content exclusive to it. I would be shocked if they even released a 4k version of the OT and PT on disc at this point.

I hope that we'll see some of them on 4K disc, given that there's another movie due which may well be the end of the Skywalker saga, at least for the foreseeable future. Primo cash-in opportunity. If they don't at least get Force Awakens and Rogue One out there on 4K disc then I am going to be PISSED.

If there isn't a 9-UHD set when Episode IX hits home media, I'll be surprised.

He may have had more creative input on ROTJ than Marquand’s director’s credit suggests, from what I’ve heard.

Yeah, that explains Jedi's mediocre direction.

He had a hand in the character's storyline. Han Solo was supposed to die in Empires (although that wasn't really a case), but he was definitely on the chopping block in ROTJ, but Lucas pulled that storyline due to the popularity and toy sales.

He also disapproved of Ian McDiarmid when he was first casted.

Think on that.

Don't worry, Bill Hunt is on the case and says they're coming!

People like to shit on Bill Hunt but he did say that Twin Peaks and The X-Files were coming on BD and he was right. Only took a couple of years though.

Lucas pretty much ghost-directed it. Marquand called the shots, as it were, but Lucas was much more hands-on during the shoot than he was on Empire (having been distracted by a myriad of other things on that show) and once Marquand and his editor delivered their contractually-obligated 'director's cut' of the film then Lucas showed them both the door, brought in his own editor and finished the film from there.

That's interesting about the 2/3" sensors, do you have any further info/links on that? Never heard about that before, and would explain some things regarding it.
There's plenty on the troubles that they encountered in the American Cinematographer article below. Basically they couldn't stop down the lenses enough to generate the depth of field that they usually used for miniatures, not even with the gigantic bits of glass they were using, and they couldn't shoot at the 1fps they would traditionally use for miniatures because the cameras could only do 24fps. So not only did they have to drench the models in light to expose them properly they also had to digitally fudge a longer exposure time.

Not sure where I heard this but marquand had no experience in special effects and had a hard time directing things that used blue screens and the like so lucas spent a lot of time on rotj.

I'm curious actually how much each of them specifically spent on the film because it feels as if lucas could have just put his name as the director.

Lucas had such a bad time on SW that he tried to distance himself from all the work yet probably had more of a bad time dealing with other directors and doing the work I'm sure he'd rather have just done then himself. Probably why he did all three PT films.

Didn’t Lucas ask other directors to direct some or all the PT films? I thought I read somewhere that he asked Spielberg to direct TPM and Spielberg told Lucas that he should direct them himself.

Spike Jonze allegedly was close with "Attack of The Clones" but I can't find any evidence besides some random IMDB trivia.
