Personal taste .. But the simplicity and choreography of the ending battle in EP IV was WAY better than ROTJ ... It really felt like a dogfight in space, ROTJ was the beginning of the downfall for me .., the introduction of teddy bears, the more is better approach .. Etc etc. Harry's Despecialized versions are pretty sweet ... No matte lines (boxes) , Han shoots first, no stupid CG additions etc etc. Last edited by mdonovan; 06-07-2014 at 11:11 AM. |

![]() Just give me the cleanest HD transfer of all the boxes, imperfections just how I saw it in the theater back in the day and I will be just fine and dandy. |

![]() Yarrr. Ye have no idea what ye is talkin' about. There are so many CG objects and characters in films & TV these days people don't notice. Why? Because they LOOK REAL. ![]() Don't upset the CG tiger. He may eat you for saying he looks like a cartoon. Last edited by PeterTHX; 06-07-2014 at 07:55 PM. |

I agree with PeterTHX, that most people look at CGI, and they would never know unless it's revealed to them in some way. Watto and Poggle the Lesser are also fantastic in AOTC. Just look at Poggle the Lesser acting alongside the guys in masks, and he looks perfectly seamless in terms of compositing and texture/lighting..... Too many to keep track off. Quote:
It's also in TESB btw., and my system is calibrated. You can't see them? Last edited by Bluyoda; 06-07-2014 at 08:56 PM. |

The most I can remember being impressed by cgi was HBO's miniseries John Adams.
Was the fist time (that I knew of) I had seen motion tracking on background mattes, and it seemed seamless to me. They recreated the shipyard and marketplace, the entire city of Boston and more, right behind the actors (actors being filmed in many cases with handheld or dollied cameras). I wasn't even aware until I saw the special features. Granted, characters are more difficult. But that experience established my benchmark for how fx shoud be: If you can see them, they've failed. |

Sometimes the CG is called for and works great. Other times you end up with extreme overuse witch bores the hell out of me ... Like in the prequel series, Jackson's King Kong , transformers, pacific rim etc etc etc IMHO on location shooting is just better usually, locations ground the movie ... that's why Abrams is shooting the sequels mostly on location. No matter how good the CG is ... You can usually tell its CG ... Especially if you work in the field. I think there are time when you cannot avoid using it ... Gravity or Prometheus come to mind ... But there are plenty of examples of ... Why didn't they just shoot it. ... As well. Watch the first Alien ... It's so cool because it feels real. Then you have Andy Serkis trying to Bogart all the credit for Gollum and King Kong ... Ugh ... http://www.cartoonbrew.com/motion-ca...kis-98868.html |

Personally, I think the CGI effects in the special editions already look more dated than the original effects that they replaced.

We should watch the Star Wars saga together, and you guys point out all the VFX you believe to be CGI, and the ones you think are practical. That would be VERY telling, I am certain. |
