Default Just saw my first Samsung 6000 series LED

I just saw my first Samsung 6000 series 55" LCD with LED lighting.

WOW !! I am not a techy guy, but I do know what looks good and this TV knocks my 550 series out of the park. 1.2 " thick and I swear it handles blacks like an upscale plasma. It's 3600.00 but it looks are worth every penny.

I wish I could get my money back on my 550 and upgrade to one of these !!

But that's what TV technology is about, buying what's nice at the time and wanting something better 10 month's later.

Saw this at Frys'.

Looks amazing. I just wish they would show more live-action films rather than the animated ones.

The animated ones look good on any/most tvs imo. It's the live-action ones that I would like to see with the skin tone and the face definition and the water, etc, etc.

Still, a very, very, beautiful TV.

honestly it has the exact same PQ as the B650. I'm at work and we have the 46" b650 next to the 46" 6000 LED and there is zero difference. We'll have to see what happens in reviews when the sets are calibrated but from factory defaults it is the same picture and you lose teh media 2.0 with the LED. It is crazy thin though which really is only for bragging rights and is 40% more energy efficient and does not contain mercury.

EDIT: Remember, it's EDGE-Lit LED, not true local dimming LED like the xbr8 and a950.

I've been curious about these as well. I'm debating between one of these and one of the new 54" Panasonic V-series plasmas. The plasma will almost certainly be less expensive. But I just wonder if the picture will have the same "pop" as these new LED's.

Those edge lit LED's are no where as impressive as the local dimming LED's. You can see what Sammy is trying to do though, by starting with the edge lit LED's (which have flash lighting problems big time) & saving the real good tech for their top of the line displays. But by introducing LED's in most of their set's, hopefully by the next year or two they will have a full range of local dimming LED LCD's for good prices. People are going to see "LED LCD" & think it's a local dimming model. Let the confusion begin....

The 6000 series sets suffer from horrible black crush. They may do a nice deep black but you lose a ton of shadow detail. I would like to take the time to properly set one up to see if the black crush is a result of default settings though or if it is just a symptom of the TV itself.

At first I thought the black crush was maybe the Chris Botti concert blu we had playing but I put Wall-E on and it had it too... these TVs are still a loooong ways off from a decent plasma.

I like my Samsung UN46B6000VF. Bought last Sunday. I had a 71 series Samsung 46". The picture on the 6000 is much better. I'm sure there will be many advancements in the next year or 2 and I'll upgrade again. Got a good deal on the 6000. It was on sale for $2199.99. Sold my old tv for $1000. I'm very happy with my purchase.

Say whatever you want about edge-lighting or other technical features but the "proof is in the pudding", as they say. The image on this TV is so good that it is beyond comparison to any brand of LCD TV. I compared one to a top-of-the line Sony LCD right next to it (as well as other LCD TVs) and it made the Sony, as well as the others, look like something from the 90's.

I was ready to pick up a 58" Samsung plasma B860 and then saw the 55" Samsung 8000 LED LCD. It looked more vibrant than the plasma and was sold on it. I was getting more info on it and found out the the 8500 series will be out later this month and it will have local dimming plus a few other improvements. Looking forward to checking this set out very soon.

These are not bad sets, but I guarantee if you see them in a dimly lit room beside the better LCD's and the better plasmas you will see a significant difference in picture quality. Yes, they can produce better blacks than a lot of LCD's but they also have very bad uniformity. In darker scenes you can see bright spots in the corners and the off-axis views on these sets are not very good and the picture will start to wash out quickly.

The higher end 8000 series is better, but still exhibits these flaws. Edge-lit LED just isn't as good as local dimming LED or plasma. Looking at these sets in a brightly lit store will not allow you to notice these problems, but they are there nonetheless. Even some traditional CCFL LCD's are better than these. Look at the B750 Samsung LCD and it mops the floor with these edge-lit sets.

I bought mine the other day, a un40b6000. I believe the black-crush is a side effect of the electricity saving. It auto dims if the image is dark. Very silly not to have an option to turn this off. If i was able to, this tv would be perfect. Besides that, huge contrast, excellent colors... no dead pixels..

o and now my ps3 games look like crap due to the 720p to 1080p upgrade i assume

for an update. watched tears of the sun which consider a dark movie at the beginning. Only time i actually notice the "crush" is when there isnt action on the screen such as title screen.

Is the local dimming really that much better than the edge lit?
I assume the 8500 will be 1.2" thick also. I'm looking for a Christmas present for the family. Still trying to figure out what to do with the 550 series i have, it may be a craigs list item soon.

These Samsung LED LCDs really are worth keeping an eye on. I spent Thanksgiving with a 55" Samsung 8000 series LED LCD and didn't notice any of the issues people are talking about. The picture is so much more amazingly clear and lifelike than any other set that I guess you don't notice this stuff. I have heard all the issues with edge lighting vs. local dimming, so I am chasing the 8500 model or waiting until next years line comes out, but these TVs are so amazing I would have a hard time not getting one if I found a good deal. They are really expensive, but you get what you pay for. The IMAX scenes that open the Dark Knight were like being there. I just wish I had brought my copy of Transformers 2 for the IMAX scenes to compare.

I would be interested to know what it is about these TVs that have put them so far past everything else out right now. Is it the 5,000,000:1 contrast ratio, the 240hz, the LEDs, or something else? I had a plasma in an adjacent room for comparison and it didn't come close. It was also a brand new 50" Samsung, but it was cheaper than the LED LCD and bought as a secondary TV for gaming. I'm keeping an eye on this line and hope others do as well. Hopefully next year's line of these models will be 60"+ and fix some of the issues people are concerned with in this batch.
